Avio-GDM
GDM Themes
Score 76%
Description:

A hopefully good looking theme for GDM Greeter. Suitable for any resolution from 640x480 to 1600x1200. Should also be useable with widescreen displays.

The first picture shows the new version 0.9.2, the second is the older version 0.5. Plz tell me if you dont like the new version and of course why you dont like it :P

The background image is from Franziska Frannerts and you can download it from this location: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/stOrmgreen?content=35826

The third picture is from the experimental Avio-Sunshine-GDM, that features a lens flare effect. You should use at least a resolution of 1024x768 or it won't look good. I marked it as experimental, but it should be very usable, since it depends on the 0.9.2 version of the default theme.

Howto install it under Gnome (Ubuntu):

1. Download this theme (currently 0.9)
2. Open the "gdmsetup", also called "Login Window Preferences"
3. Open the tab "Local"
4. Use the "Add" Button and select the downloaded file.
5. Make sure you select the "Avio-GDM" in the List.
6. Close dialog and logout to see it.

Howto change the background image

1. Download the current version of this theme (0.9.2).
2. Extract it with the compression tool of your choice.
3. Navigate into the extracted folder and replace the "background.jpg" with the image of your choice.
4. Put it into a ".tar.gz" Archive again and you should have a theme with your own background. (plz don't change the directory structure)

No offense, pal, but You need to google for things like "Ubuntu change GDM3 theme".
Unfortunately the Avio-Theme is a GDM2-Theme, which means it's incompatible to GDM3 used by Ubuntu. Bad luck :-(
This simply is the wrong place to ask for that. But I'm quite sure, if You ask this question at an Ubuntu-forum You'll get Your answear. I wish You good luck! :-)

Despite Rapidshare's "new hosting model" :-$ the above links are still active. However, sometimes I get a somewhat blank page when following one of the links. If You encounter this, simply try reloading the (nearly blank) page once (or twice...). Sorry for the inconvenience :-/

Currently Microsoft's "Smart Screen Filter" lists avio-gdm.tar.gz as an "unsafe download". I already contacted Microsoft's support to resolve this. You have my word, that there is no malware or anything like that in that archive! Is a "false positive", I promise. But, if You want to be sure, You might want to check that download at virustotal.com. You'll get a 100 % clean rating. Hell only knows why Microsoft called it "unsafe"... :-$

I'm wondering if you could make a gtk theme like this. I have not seen a theme that looks this good.

I agree...
I have this amazing login screen... Then I go to my mediocre, default Ubuntu theme...
I seriously can't find anything better than that, which is kinda sad.

I really like the experimental version! I have one question though: Does the user list stay in the right place regardless of what display resolution is being used (16:9, 16:10 4:3 etc.)? And if yes, what kind of anchor or other setting did you use to manage that? Can't check it myself right now since I'm using another OS...
Thanks! :-)

The "inner" Window has always the same size and is centered on screen while the background is stretched. So the layout inside the window will always look like on this screenshots. In the experimental version the lensflair effect might be off, thats why it is experimental. ;-)

how can we take screenshots from a GDM screen, without having to draw a mockup or installing into an emulator?

Many distributions have the packets "xnest" and "gdmthemetest" (a script, mostly already installed or bundled with xnest) inside their repositories. You only need to start it with an example like this:

#!/bin/bash
export XNESTSIZE=1024x768
gdmthemetester console Avio-Side-GDM

Note: Avio-Side-GDM is the name of the folder in wich the theme files are installed. "console" is the mode in which the theme is startet in. The manpage may be helpfull for other modes.

then you can simple start the theme inside your desktop and take a simple screenshot.

thanks, but i got an error message - from both terminal window and tty display:

guest@macbook:~$ export XNESTSIZE=1024x768
guest@macbook:~$ gdmthemetester console MinimalAsRarelly
GDM Theme Tester
Be sure to test all the environments:
console, console-timed, flexi, remote-flexi, xdmcp
Also be sure to test using caps lock
(gdmgreeter:19986): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
guest@macbook:~$

which way you're used to do it successfully? i really don't know what i'm doing wrong...

thanks! =)

should i export the display variable as well, and how?

Report

I started it within the gnome-termial and i didn't need to define any display variable.

PS: Maybe you should use your normal user. "guest" is a little suspicious...
