Description:

I hijacked another theme to create this one for my wife who liked the look of XP but wanted to try Ubuntu. I thought someone else might like it also.Enjoy!

I added two different start buttons in addition to the original "windows" start button. Now you can choose from a Linux penguin or an Ubuntu start button

Personaly I see this as very useful. there are times i dont want people to know I'm using linux in a public setting.
Call it hiding in plain site but if I'm sitting in a bar or library many people have walked by and dismissed my machine because they see what looks like XP.
My hat's off to the creator. You Sir,are a visual artist.

Don't get me wrong - i hate windows - however, I often need to do a quick screen cast or tutorial for someone who is stuck in windows. This is so much easier than having to remote desktop in to a second machine. People just freakout sometimes if you look too cool :)

I actually think this is great. I have a laptop running as a server. I have it autoboot to a guest account so I can access it on the road. So my wife powers it up as I need. She's much more comfortable (accustomed) with XP, so this boots right into a comfortable interface for her. My admin account is more traditional Ubuntu, but this fits the bill perfectly. Great job.

What the hell? >:( No offence man but rated bad. I'm sorry if you put a lot of work into this but this is defiantly what we DON'T want to see. This makes us look like we have NO taste and have to copy M$. All mac/windows nock-off themes need to die.

I share with you the disliking of win and mac clone themes, but I don't think they are necessarily a bad thing. If somebody likes the look of another OS, but doesn't like the OS itself, it is nice for him to have a similar look. It is just a matter of taste, and it is good to have choise for that matter.
But what bothers me the most in all this theme cloning matter are the logos. I can understand that somebody likes Vista's Aero theme or Mac OS's Aqua, but I just can't understand the reason of why to put a win or apple logo on it! It is like wearing a fake Nike t-shirt (or even worse) - what's the point?

Well the creator of the theme did mention that he has a wife who is using a Linux machine. And guys, believe me, some people are kinda BrainWashed by the whole windows look, so a Linux transition might be kinda hard for them to handle. My wife had (has) the same problem. When I first installed Linux, she asked Questions such as, "Where is the close button? Minimize, etc..." Seems stupid, but it's true for many folks. So I said F*** it, I'll just find a Windows theme and put it on her machine, and that actually worked fine. So these themes do have their useful purpose.:-)

We? We? I surely hope it's the royal WE you're using. I like the theme. It's given me the opportunity to put linux on my parent's box without having to explain everything to them.
Windows- and mac-interfaces are designed by large teams of professional interface-designers. It would be a shame if linux/ubuntu/others did not use the insights gathered by these people.

Just remember: because YOU want to desperately be unique and 'different', that does not mean everyone shares your ideas.
You are not a unique and beautiful snowflake.

I've created a simple script that uses this theme (among others) to make Gnome look like XP - All you have to do is run the script - No messing w/ gconf-editor or manually changing panel items.

Hi!

I would like to know if its possible to have a panel 30x30 and with custom startbutton.. i have it right now and the starticon doesnt fit.. It looks ugly.. only solution is to have icon 32x32 but i need 30x30..

Is there any solution for this?

Rockhaxor, I've got a question: How did you get the Places & System menus to show up in just the one menu? I think my wife would like this, since I still have yet to convert her to Linux. Hopefully this'll motivate her...

If you like the having a windows like feel to your Main Menu then this may be your answer.

Right-click on the panel where you want the Main Menu to appear and select Add to Panel

In the new window, scroll down to Utilities and select Main Menu

Click Add and it will appear in the panel.

Right-click the Ubuntu icon and select Move to move it to wherever you prefer ( I like it to the left corner)

If you haven’t removed the Menu bar (Applications, Places, System) yet right-click and remove

To customized the main menu icon:

1.Open up the terminal (applications>accessories>terminal)

Insert this code In the terminal (applications>accessories>terminal):

The configuration editor opens, then open these folders in the left pane (apps>panel>objects)

You will see a list of objects in the pane, locate the one that says (menu_object) next to object_type in the right pane.

Once this is located scroll down and locate the use custom icon entry and select it.

Scroll back up and double click the custom icon entry, this will open a new window asking for the path to the icon you wish to use. Enter the path in the value field and click OK

( If the icon is in your pictures folder in your home folder the path would look like this:)

/home/USERNAME/pictures/start.png

I JUST WANNA SAY THANX VERY MUCH, THIS IS A VERY GOOD JOB, SPECIALLY FOR THIS PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO MIGRATE FROM WINDSHIT TO LINUX.

BUT I WANNA ASKYOU SOMETHING, HOW YOU MKEIT?, HOW I CAN CREATE A NEW OR DIFERENT THEME FOR UBUNTU OR OTHER DISTRIBUTION OF LINUX???

Being a graphic artist and not a coder, I decided to download a few themes and take them apart (to see what makes them work).

After studying a few of them and tinkering with the gtkrc file that is included, in the GTK folder of the theme I downloaded, I decide to replace the graphics included of the themes file I downloaded.

What I would suggest is to open all the images folders and look inside (do this for both the GTK and the metacity folders). Then replace those images with ones of your own creation (make sure that they are the same size as the originals, until you become more familiar with theming). Name the new images you produce with the same names as the ones you are replacing, or you will need to alter the gtkrc, panel.rc and other files in the theme to reflect those new names.

As you become more confident, you will probably need to alter the gtkrc or other files that dictate the attributes of the theme, to change font colors, icons sizes, spacings, etc. etc..

Just have fun with it and enjoy the freedom linux provides us.

This is great! ur abs rite, such themes will make migration from Windows to Linux much easier! the fact that u did that so that ur better half can get used to Linux is so sweet! Rated gud mate! Xcellent!

there is a problem with the right-click submenu in firefox (it's all black.) this theme looks cool eventho I dislike winblows. very good job!
