Equinox GTK Engine
GTK2 Themes
Description:

A heavily modified version of the beautiful Aurora engine (1.4). Thanks to his author.

IMPORTANT! Since version 1.40, the file below contains only the engine source. You can download themes (both GTK and Metacity) from the second and third links :
- The five Equinox Evolution themes are new offical ones and will get some updates in the future. Only these themes are now included in the theme package available from the Launchpad PPA
- The original themes are no longer maintained (but still usable).

Engine installation

First of all, make sure you have installed the GTK+ library development files (libgtk2.0-dev on Debian/Ubuntu, gtk2-devel on Fedora) with your favourite package manager.

Then to compile the Equinox engine, extract the corresponding archive in your home folder. In the new directory, run the following commands:
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation
make

On Fedora 64 bits (and perhaps other distribs), compilation don't work with the options above. You must run:
./configure --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib64 --enable-animation

Finally, run this command as root:
make install

Themes installation

To install the themes, extract the content of the other archive in your ~/.themes.

You can easily change the colour used for selected items or tooltips in Appearance preferences.

To fix the issue with the text of selected menu items in Firefox and Thunderbird, copy the userChrome.css in both ~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/chrome/ and ~/.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default/chrome/

To use the Equinox Evolution theme with Chromium or Google Chrome, open the browser and drag the CRX file (provided in the themes archive) into the address bar. In applications options, don't forget to enable the display of Metacity borders.

Icon theme
A (still uncomplete) version of Faenza icon theme is now available. Follow the link a the bottom of this page.

I think this is one of the best theme I have seen. Thanks for the great work.

I do have one question though. Where does (in which file where?) does this theme controls the color of the GNOME-menu? It does not seems to use the "Highlighted Color" for hovering highlight for that menu. It seems to use "Windows background" instead. In particular, if I try to turn this into a dark theme by setting the "Window bg" colors, the highlight is now black-on-black and completely invisible.

Gnome menu color is controlled by a color variable named 'panel_bg' in gtkrc file.

Search for the style 'theme-black', you will see this line:
color["panel_bg"] = shade(0.25, @bg_color)

Change the value by whatever you want and adjust the colors below. Then, search for style 'theme-panel' and remove the background pixmap.

Best theme I've come across without a doubt. Thank you for sharing.

Like others, I'm also looking forward to the icon set.

I might mention - there is only one thing I'd personally enjoy as an option: For some time I've been using a Panel Background Image that's a gradient transparent. Panel Properties > Background tab > 3rd Option. Is there something I can do to make my own background image work with this theme? When I apply my own image, there are pieces of the panel that retain the black color from your theme. I am unaware of how to alter this.

Again, wonderful design. Great work. Thank you.

I acknowledge, it is indeed the best theme i´ve ever used... and god knows, elementary-gtk is hard to beat.

Keep on work and release the icon-theme soon ;)

1) What is the font you're using in the screenshot? It goes very well with the engine.

2) Not exactly sure why, but my panels look flat, not rounded like in the screenshot. Any ideas?

Great engine, keep up the good work!

Also, just out of curiosity, is it the same font you used for the window title?

Hi,

1) The font i use (for controls and window titles) is Aurulent Sans. You can dowload it here : http://www.dafont.com/fr/aurulent-sans.font.

2) Check your panel properties. In background tab, the first option must be selected.

I have found one more bug, which is also present in Aurora.
Steppers in scrollbars are not centered correctly, when you give slider-width other value than 9 or 13.

Also, as someone already said - toolbar doesn't react properly when menubar is not present above it and it will always have highlight. Also, toolbar doesn't react to
GtkToolbar::shadow-type = GTK_SHADOW_NONE

I really like this theme. How can I change the menu items/notification area so that I can make the entire panel transparent by right clicking it and going to properties?

This is very good, but it doesn't work well when I'm using gnome2-globalmenu, because of the borders surrounding the toolbars, on apps such as nautilus. I get a light border between the toolbar and the window titlebar.

Is there any way to disable toolbar borders?

Hello!

I've compiled Equinox engine for Fedora. Take a look here:

Thanks for the engine!

Look in the gtkrc file located in ~/.themes/Equinox/gtk-2.0 or /usr/share/themes/Equinox/gtk-2.0.

the gtk2-engines-aurora has a bad fame on the performance. have a look at:

what's about equinox?

First of all - excellent engine!
I just started to make theme on it.

There is one thing that bothers me: light border around menu-item. It makes menu-item look strange when it's colour is not dark or light enough. Such border gives an illusion of vertical asymmetry.

It would be nice if themer could disable such border (selected menu-item would look similar to Aurora's).

Report

Also, option to remove glass effect from progressbar would also be nice.

Report

tiheum

In gtkrc file, you can change the value of bg[ACTIVE] in the "theme-menu" style to modify the border color of the menus.

Concerning the progressbars, i will add a parameter in the next update of Equinox engine to disable the glassy effect.
