Equinox GTK Engine
GTK2 Themes
Description:

A heavily modified version of the beautiful Aurora engine (1.4). Thanks to his author.

IMPORTANT! Since version 1.40, the file below contains only the engine source. You can download themes (both GTK and Metacity) from the second and third links :
- The five Equinox Evolution themes are new offical ones and will get some updates in the future. Only these themes are now included in the theme package available from the Launchpad PPA
- The original themes are no longer maintained (but still usable).

Engine installation

First of all, make sure you have installed the GTK+ library development files (libgtk2.0-dev on Debian/Ubuntu, gtk2-devel on Fedora) with your favourite package manager.

Then to compile the Equinox engine, extract the corresponding archive in your home folder. In the new directory, run the following commands:
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation
make

On Fedora 64 bits (and perhaps other distribs), compilation don't work with the options above. You must run:
./configure --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib64 --enable-animation

Finally, run this command as root:
make install

Themes installation

To install the themes, extract the content of the other archive in your ~/.themes.

You can easily change the colour used for selected items or tooltips in Appearance preferences.

To fix the issue with the text of selected menu items in Firefox and Thunderbird, copy the userChrome.css in both ~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/chrome/ and ~/.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default/chrome/

To use the Equinox Evolution theme with Chromium or Google Chrome, open the browser and drag the CRX file (provided in the themes archive) into the address bar. In applications options, don't forget to enable the display of Metacity borders.

Icon theme
A (still uncomplete) version of Faenza icon theme is now available. Follow the link a the bottom of this page.

Thanks.
I wasn't talking about menu itself, but menu-items. Equinox generates light borders around them, which are getting darker at the bottom of menu-item. Take a look at this screenshot:
http://omploader.org/vNDJrNA

It looks fine, when you use certain colour (like the one you used in Equinox Radiance) or very dark shade, like this one:

I really like this theme! But the title buttons are a bit too small for me. How would I go about changing it? Thanks!

I liked the theme very much. It is the best theme.. I tried on 9.10. It worked beautifully, but my desktop has 9.04. I did not work. What might be the problem. I installed .deb packages Now i am going to compile it..

Hey your theme is great! I'm using instead of the light themes from lucid, it's a very nice work!
And will you release a 'equinox ambience'?
Also the spin and combo-entry buttons look estrange...
But your work is incredible! I wait the release of the icon theme too, looks very nice!

Hi, I've just found that Equinox looks pretty nice when used to draw OpenOffice, allthough menus are drawn black with black text (only hovered and insensitive items are visible) -- don't you know, where OO takes these colors from, so I could change them?

One of the best theme ever installed. Wish it could be the default theme of Ubuntu Lucid 10.4.
Waiting for the release of Icon theme.

This theme is very nice!
Usually I prefer a greyish/blueish colour scheme.
But anyway, you did a fantastic job!

Thanks.

Can a version of the default metacity themes be designed that looks better with the default button arrangement in Ubuntu Lucid?

Just move your windows buttons back to the original order, ie Min,Max,Close.
Open up gconf-editor, Apps, Metacity, General, then find the string called "button_layout". A colon signifies which side of the window the buttons will be on; having the string value set as "menu:minimize, maximize, close" will give you exactly what is depicted in the preview above. I have mine set as "minimize, maximize, close:menu"

hey, just want to say this is definitely the greatest looking engine I have used in my Ubuntu system. Just curious though, what is the fourth caption button on the top left side of the windows in your previews, and how do I enable it? I've looked all over, but I can't seem to find any mention of it in any rc files or anything....

Thanks

I don't see what you mean. If the menu button (the left one with the arrow) is missing, try this :

Launch gconf-editor and look a the value of the key named button_layout in /apps/metacity/general. Mine is menu:minimize, maximize, close.

Hope this helps

Yes, I was referring to the menu button (didn't know what it was actually called...) That solved it, thanks so much! Keep up the good work! We'll be eagerly awaiting the release of those icons.... :)

When installing the engine and GTK themes. and 32bit packages i get the message.

That the icon-theme Faenza is missing and theirfore the theme cannot be completed.

The theme displays fine without the icon pack (which is still currently under development, see the description above). Gnome is just telling you that it won't look as intended without said icon theme.
