Description:

MediterraneanNight Series 2.03

12 Themes for Gnome 3.6.x and 3.8.x

* IMPORTANT *
- GTK2 theme uses gtk2-engines-murrine and gtk2-engines-pixbuf
- Inside the theme folder (MediterraneanNight) there is a readme.txt file with some really simple instructions to customize the theme (styles for nautilus, 4 tab styles, metacity buttons)
- Ubuntu 12.10 comes by default with gnome 3.6 and nautilus-3.4 (though you can upgrade to nautilus-3.6), but if you have nautilus-3.4, you must set the theme for nautilus-3.4, as explained in the readme.txt

- Almost all the themes are the same, varying between each of them only the color scheme and some bitmaps, which provides an opportunity for the more restless to create your own theme with few changes.

Take for example the series MediterraneanTribute

Known issues:
- qBitTorrent with MediterraneanGrayDark.

-------------------
* FEDORA 19 users *
-------------------
The default installation of the package gtk2-engines, not install you really need, which is this:
Murrine GTK2 engine
gtk-murrine-engine-0.98.2-3fc19

- MediterraneanNight also support nautilus-3.4. (see readme.txt)
---------------------------------
* Select style for nautilus *
---------------------------------
Edit the file ../MediterraneanNight/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

go to the last line of the file, there are seven options for nautilus:
Nautilus 3.6.x for gnome-shell 3.6.x and/or unity (by default)
@import url("nautilus36.css");

3 options for nautilus 3.4.x (gnome-shell)
1.- "gnome-nautilus34-gray.css" (nautilus sidebar and toolbar dark gray)
2.- "gnome-nautilus34-light.css" (nautilus sidebar and toolbar light)
3.- "gnome-nautilus34-gray-light.css" (nautilus sidebar dark gray and toolbar light)

3 options for nautilus 3.4.x (UNITY)
1.- "unity-nautilus34-gray.css"
2.- "unity-nautilus34-light.css"
3.- "unity-nautilus34-gray-light.css"

There's a bug with the on/off switches in the appindicators, screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/tudKhJe.png

I can not reproduce the error on my system (ubuntu 12.10).
Will install ubuntu 13.04 in a VM and try to fix it before the final version

It only happens with the now (in Raring) default Sync Menu and the new Bluetooth indicator (but with this indicator, only on mouse over) which has replaced the old Bluetooth indicator hack that was available in Ubuntu 12.10: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/02/ubuntu-1304-raring-ringtail-changes.html

As noted in the comments above, there are still some issues with toolbars and lists in GTK2 apps. Here are a few quick edits to gtkrc I've been using to make life easier (intended for MediterraneanNight):

1) Fix alternating backgrounds on list views. In section style "default":
GtkTreeView ::odd_row_color = shade (0.85, @base_color)
GtkTreeView ::even_row_color = shade (1.02, @bg_color)

2) Fix unreadable text on dropdown menus (ie: firefox) by going with a lighter theme. In section style "menu":
bg[NORMAL] = shade (1.02, @bg_color)

3) Change titlebar to match above lighter dropdown menu theme. In section style "menubar":
fg[NORMAL] = @fg_color
bg[NORMAL] = shade (1.02, @bg_color)

(This was posted for my benefit as much as others, I had to dig through google cache to find it again since the switch to v2.0)

Meeting your suggestions and ineffective and discussed above.

'1) Fix alternating backgrounds on list views ...'
ListView already has alternating background color (very soft, as I like).

proposed code or instructions
GtkTreeView :: odd_row_color = shade (0.85, @ base_color)
GtkTreeView :: even_row_color = shade (1.02, @ bg_color)
already exists in MediterraneanNight, you know. Is disabled one of the lines because it gives several problems with some GTK2 applications. (one 'Eclipse').

If you go right to activate the two lines, activate them. I have to think of hundreds of users with hundreds of different configurations.

'2) Fix unreadable text on dropdown menus (ie: firefox)'
The arrangement you propose already in the previous version, and I said in another comment earlier that if not solved, would put the toolbars gtk2 as in the previous version (Nor does happens with all variations of the theme, only those with the dark frame)

In fact it's fixed in the variations that have this problem, and today, will update to version PreRelease-2 when I have some time

'3) Change titlebar to match above lighter dropdown ...'
Definitely not. ┬┐titlebar or menubar?
Or you not explained well or I do not quite understand

If you really want to help. Could make some of the windows themes of Xfce not done yet?

The old discussion threads from the earlier version has disappeared from this site. Let me return to my original problem. Exploring again with Pre-Release2.

(Parts 2&3) Under MediterraneanNight, menus in GTK3 apps such as Nautilus, Nemo, and Gedit look great. However, in GTK2 apps such as Firefox, Deluge, and Gimp.. dropdown menus look like this, the dark grey on dark grey is unusable:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/59/gtk2.png

I narrowed down the settings for the dropdown menu to the section style "menu" however I there were no settings for foreground text. I tried adding fg[NORMAL] or text[NORMAL] but they had no effect. So Instead I borrowed bg[NORMAL] from another section of the theme. Using this line resulted in a lighter background and the text was much more readable:
bg[NORMAL] = shade (1.02, @bg_color)

The major problem with this is that now the dropdown menu doesnt match the menubar so I changed the menubar to match with these lines in section style "menubar" (again borrowed from other sections of the theme):
fg[NORMAL] = @fg_color
bg[NORMAL] = shade (1.02, @bg_color)

While this leads to some inconsistency between GTK2 and GTK3 apps, the result is much more usable unless the text colors can be corrected for "menu".

(Part1) There seems to be different ways older programs build their lists. Under MediterraneanNight the list in most programs such as Deluge look great. However in some programs such as Nicotine+ they look like this. The black background alternating with light background is unusable:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/594/badlists.png

I narrowed down the settings for this list to the
section style "default" lines odd_row_color and even_row_color. I can see that even_row_color has been commented out due to a problem with another program but the current fix of commenting it out results in the black background lines shown above. Borrowing again from other parts of the theme and trying to match the list colors of Deluge I replaced these lines with this. Giving a pleasing result:
GtkTreeView ::odd_row_color = shade (0.85, @base_color)
GtkTreeView ::even_row_color = shade (1.02, @bg_color)

I installed eclipse and attempted to explore the problem further but am unfamiliar with the program and was unable to install any samples to test with. Perhaps there is a better solution than simply commenting out the even_row_color but instead defining a neutral color.

I'm sorry I did mean menubar not titlebar, and I do not run xfce so am unable to help in that regard.

Fonts could be more distinguished from the background, darker or lighter depends, less gray, closer to black and white :)

MediterraneanNight White is what I've been looking for after Green Day was not updated any more.
Thanks, it's a great theme!

Since this is a pre-release, I'd like to propose a fix. Button toolbar background is different for GTK2 and GTK3 applications.
Like so: http://imgur.com/a/REYR7

I've changed /usr/share/themes/MediterraneanWhite/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
line 669 to:
bg[NORMAL] = @bg_color
and line 6679 to:
gradient_shades = {1.00,0.96,0.96,0.90}

GTK2 apps now have the same color/gradient toolbar background as GTK3 ones.
Similar fix should apply to other variants of the theme if you're experiencing the issue.

Thanks again ;)

(Greybird Metacity theme is used for window decorations in the screenshot)

Yes, you're right.
The gtk2 toolbars are always a headache for me.

The problem of this type of gradient is when there are multiple toolbars in an application (something common in gtk2 apps)

almost'm more in favor of put them flat, that way does not clash too much with GTK3, do you think?

if you mean Green Day? as GrayDay? for gnome 3.4
MediterraneanWhite series included here just to give coverage to GrayDay users ;)

All themes in this series have in common 95% of the code, which greatly facilitates maintenance and ensures long life to all the variations of the theme.

Hats off to you for these wonderful variations. I have been using Night for sometime, but really love the new WhiteNight :)
I use this on Linux Mint 14. The font color on the Nemo (Nautilus quivalent) location bar is little dark and hard to read. This is the only issue I had faced. Let me know if you need a screenshot to clarify what I am saying.
Thanks again for this excellent theme.

for a quick fix before the next update, can do the following.

edit the file ../MediterraneanWhiteNight/gtk-3.0/gnome-mdi.css

on line 601, replace '@theme_fg_dark_color' by '@theme_text_dark_color', as is here
NemoWindow .primary-toolbar.toolbar NemoPathbarButton * {
color: shade(@theme_text_dark_color, 1.00);
text-shadow: 0px 1px @theme_shadow_dark_color;
}

if not dark enough, try changing the value of the instruction 'shade' as follows (the lowest value is darker)
color: shade(@theme_text_dark_color, 0.80);

on line 630, add the instruction 'font: bold', as is here
NemoWindow .primary-toolbar.toolbar NemoPathbarButton *:active,
NemoWindow .primary-toolbar.toolbar NemoPathbarButton *:hover:active {
font: bold;
color: shade(@theme_text_dark_color, 1.00);
text-shadow: 1px 1px @theme_shadow_dark_color;

}

is very useful for me to know if this solves your problem :)

In view of the large number of MediterraneanNight themes, I've written a simple script to quickly make necessary changes in all of them for my system configuration, i.e. Ubuntu Unity with Nautilus 3.4 Patched (http://www.webupd8.org/2012/08/install-solusos-patched-nautilus-in-ubuntu-1204.html).
I've placed this script in the Knowledge Base section here: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?action=knowledgebase&content=156782&kbid=1935

But I've also decided to give Nautilus 3.6 a try and see how much I miss Nautilus 3.4 (e.g. dual pane mode, bookmarks and what else I'm not sure)

I wish you could give Nautilus 3.4 the same looks as 3.6 ;-)

You know I'm talking about a smooth and seamless integration between titlebar and path/toolbar which can be seen in your screenshots and not on my screen because I use Nautilus 3.4 ;-)

I'd happily upgrade if they didn't remove support for Nautilus actions, scripts and dual-pane mode, etc.
