Description:

MediterraneanNight Series 2.03

12 Themes for Gnome 3.6.x and 3.8.x

* IMPORTANT *
- GTK2 theme uses gtk2-engines-murrine and gtk2-engines-pixbuf
- Inside the theme folder (MediterraneanNight) there is a readme.txt file with some really simple instructions to customize the theme (styles for nautilus, 4 tab styles, metacity buttons)
- Ubuntu 12.10 comes by default with gnome 3.6 and nautilus-3.4 (though you can upgrade to nautilus-3.6), but if you have nautilus-3.4, you must set the theme for nautilus-3.4, as explained in the readme.txt

- Almost all the themes are the same, varying between each of them only the color scheme and some bitmaps, which provides an opportunity for the more restless to create your own theme with few changes.

Take for example the series MediterraneanTribute

Known issues:
- qBitTorrent with MediterraneanGrayDark.

-------------------
* FEDORA 19 users *
-------------------
The default installation of the package gtk2-engines, not install you really need, which is this:
Murrine GTK2 engine
gtk-murrine-engine-0.98.2-3fc19

- MediterraneanNight also support nautilus-3.4. (see readme.txt)
---------------------------------
* Select style for nautilus *
---------------------------------
Edit the file ../MediterraneanNight/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

go to the last line of the file, there are seven options for nautilus:
Nautilus 3.6.x for gnome-shell 3.6.x and/or unity (by default)
@import url("nautilus36.css");

3 options for nautilus 3.4.x (gnome-shell)
1.- "gnome-nautilus34-gray.css" (nautilus sidebar and toolbar dark gray)
2.- "gnome-nautilus34-light.css" (nautilus sidebar and toolbar light)
3.- "gnome-nautilus34-gray-light.css" (nautilus sidebar dark gray and toolbar light)

3 options for nautilus 3.4.x (UNITY)
1.- "unity-nautilus34-gray.css"
2.- "unity-nautilus34-light.css"
3.- "unity-nautilus34-gray-light.css"

I use gnome 3.8 and I have no problem with nautilus desktop backgrounds (managed and unmanaged by nautilus)

Report

I just upgraded to Nautilus 3.8.2 and the problem has gone away in Gnome Shell, but if I use Metacity + Gnome Panel (e.g. Fallback mode, without Gnome Shell) the background is still blank. That might possibly still be a theming issue.

Have you looked at the theme while running Metacity and Gnome Panel? Some parts of Gnome Panel styling are still funky. For example, the shortcut icons (Application Launcher applets) are spaced too far apart, the System Monitor applet has white borders that clash with the theme, and the Menu Bar applet is less tall than the panel which leaves some unwanted empty space (only 1px in my case, but some users change their panel height). Adding some hover styling to the Window List would be nice too (right now it's just static). (a large number of us still prefer Gnome Panel over Gnome Shell, so those details are important). Other than that, your theme is very nice. Great work!

The background issue seems to be theme-related based on these couple of Arch Linux forum threads:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162204
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=161918

When using Compiz, the background shows animation trails, which may or may not be related (more likely not, but maybe a styling fix will cause the background to render).

The Separator applet could use some styling too. It's just a plain white vertical line spanning the entire height of the panel.

Hi!

I was wondering if it is possible to somehow globally deactivate the noise pattern on the titlebar. Is is very intense on my monitor and is distracting / looks rather unpleasant.

Thanks for your help!

The quickest way is to download my other theme 'Uncomplicated'
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Uncomplicated?content=157986

Inside the theme folder there is a folder called 'textures', inside are the instructions to disable the textures.
The process is the same, but applied to MediterraneanNight folders instead of Uncomplicated folders (not difficult :) ).

Hi there!

First of all, I congratulate you for your theme. It's clean and elegant, and I use it since a while already!

I had some problems and I had to format my fedora 18. Now I installed fedora 19. I install your theme and it works nice. However, firefox and libreoffice don't take it. I know they are GTK2 instead of GTK3. But I remember in my previous install everything was looking just nice!

I installed gtk-murrine-engine and gtk2-engines in fedora from normal repos but that doesn't fix this "annoying" problem. I also have fxchrome for firefox but that keeps the ugly toolbar as it was. could you refresh my mind, and tell me what I'm missing here please?

Many thanks and sorry if it's explained somewhere, but I haven't found it yet.

Hi, I installed Fedora 19 in a vm (virtualbox) and effectively gives problems.

The problem is that the installation of the package gtk2-engines, not install you really need, which is this (in my case the 64-bit):

Murrine GTK2 engine
gtk-murrine-engine-0.98.2-3fc19 (64 bits)

after installing it, everything worked correctly

I hope I there been helpful

Hey there!

Thanks for the fast answer!

So, I reinstalled the murrine engine and at the beginning everything was the same. My issue was that I installed the theme in my ~/.local/themes folder. Later I installed it in /usr/share/themes, and now everything is fine. For me that does not make sense at all, but now it is perfect.

Thanks!

It says this is gnome 3.8 compatible but it's not working with Pidgin, gogoel chrome menus or firefox. DO I need to do something special to get this working?

Report

Pidgin, google chrome or firefox not gnome 3.8 applications (GTK3), are GTK2 applications.

For GTK2 applications need to meet the requirements explained at the beginning of the post

* IMPORTANT *
- GTK2 theme uses gtk2-engines-murrine and gtk2-engines-pixbuf

There are distros that bring the engines for GTK2 preinstalled and others you have to install them manually from repositories.

Please see the last message: 'Firefox/libreoffice toolbar' or the annotation at the beginning of the post about fedora 19 and gtk2-engines (in case this is your problem)

Great themes! The only thing I need to make them perfect for my tastes is to change the window title text from centered to left-justified.

I played around with the X coordinates for the "title_focused" and "title_unfocused" draw_ops in metacity-theme-3.xml but that didn't do it.

Is there a way to move the titlebar text to the left rather than centered?

Thanks for the beautiful designs!

Report

This is the right way, but it has to be noted that:
1.- If you are using gnome-shell should modify metacity-theme-3.xml

2.- If you are using unity or fallback mode metacity-theme-1.xml

In any case, start by giving to X the value 10, here the quotes are usually look bad but it would be something like x='10' then go changing your taste. (no need to change the value of Y)

Thanks for the tip, now it's (almost) perfect!

There is just one thing that has me scratching my head, and that is the appearance of the main window of unity-tweak-tool. I've got a screenshot: http://db.tt/KF9oErwL

Haven't yet found another app that looks the same way.

Hi.. First off, great work with the themes! I am using MWhiteNight on Ubuntu 12.04 & Gnome 3. In many windows like an alert, tweak-tools etc I see all fonts in white (which doesn't go well with the theme)[Sample screenshot - http://imgur.com/f2ygDrN] Is there a way to change the font color? preferably black?

Thanks!

I'm glad that your eyes are better now and wish it never occurs again.

For me the only issue remaining in this marvelous theme is the toolbar bgcolor in my favorite text editor, medit.

I also would like to ask something if possible: 1) nautilus sidebar bgcolor codes in dark, light and white versions so that I can use the same in Thunderbird. 2) if you would be willing to reveal a "trade secret"; how you manage to produce a uniform toolbar bgcolor in the new synaptic while all other themes (e.g. Faience) fail in this ;-)

Hi Sadi,

Thanks!

For the first question, nautilus sidebar bgcolor codes in dark, light, etc ... there is every chance that these options are available in the next update v2.04.

For the second question, lol ... no secrets here, is open source :)

in the file ../gtk-3.0/gtk-widgets.css on line 1208, GtkHandleBox widget is defined in the same way that the toolbar

GtkHandleBox,
.toolbar {
........
.....
}

' .. toolbar bgcolor in my favorite text editor, medit.'
are already an old problem that I can not solve, the GTK2 dark toolbars give me many problems with qt applications. But I will pick up the problem in case I can do something.
