Description:

The original Comix Cursors.

X11 mouse theme with a comics feeling.
The package comes with 12 different mouse themes for X11.
6 colors (black, blue, green, orange, red and white)
2 different weights (slim and normal)

From version 0.8 on the cursors are 'multisize', meaning that you don't need to install one theme for each size, but only one theme, and chose the size in the cursor theme selection dialog.

The full installation also includes left-handed themes, you can choose whatever you prefer from the downloads below.

The cursors are named according to the freedesktop.org cursor naming convention, compatibility and hash cursor names are linked. In addition to the original cursor pack left-handed and opaque versions are still available here.

Please read the README and INSTALL files provided in the source package for installation and packaging instructions, as well as some hints on various issues.

"Vast" versions for visually impaired can be downloaded here: http://www.limitland.de/comixcursors.html . There are links for windows ports by firstfooter, teft and Jus on that page as well.

If you don't like the "hair" line for the text-, vertical-text- and crosshair-cursors, you can download the "NOHAIR"-sources below and replace the source files "text.svg", "vertical-text.svg" and "crosshair.svg" sources in the svg/LeftHanded and svg/RightHanded source-directories and build your cursors. These cursors might look better to you e.g. on dark backgrounds.

GNOME USERS:
------------
Ben has investigated how to configure the cursor size:

* Gnome supports multiple cursor sizes in one cursor theme, but only
distinct sizes: 16, 24, 32, and 48 pixels.

There is no known Gnome 3 application for setting the size of the mouse
cursor. You need to set the desired size in pixels as the value of the
DConf setting ‘org.gnome.desktop.interface.cursor-size’. You can use
‘dconf-editor’ (from the ‘dconf-tools’ package) or ‘gsettings’ to change
DConf settings.

ComixCursors come in sizes 32, 40, 48 and 64.

Well, the best mouse theme I know... BUT: imo some cursors should look more abstract e.g. the hand/grab-cursor could look like... ehm... a supernova-like expansion? I hope, you know what I mean! :)

hi, really great theme you made there. but is there a version without transparency also? i'm using the smallest orange cursor and on dark backgrounds it gets really though to see (especially the mark-text-cursor).

Hey that's fantastic, they look great!

I simply downloaded the ComixCursors-0.4.1.tar.bz2 folder, dragged it to;

/home/irony/.icons

Right clicked it and extracted it to that folder.

Then went to;

System > Preferences > Mouse > Cursors

And found a whole bunch of new cursors added to the already existing Human theme (Ubuntu Breezy). They work instantly by clicking on them. I'm using a blue transparent theme at the moment.

The only thing is that I would prefer it if it extracts as one folder, e.g. ~/.icons/ComixCursors - or else it will mix with other other stuff in ~/.icons; can I change it to that?

How does System > Preferences > Mouse > Cursors know to look in ~/.icons anyway?

Hey there,
~/.icons? http://www.xfree86.org/current/Xcursor.3.html . It's coded within the Xcursors.
And Xcursors can support different sizes in one cursor file - Gnome makes use of it - but that doesn't work in KDE. So every cursor needs an own directory :-(. No problem IMHO.

I see what you mean - you've actually made a whole bunch of cursor styles.

Very professional look as well.

This is a fantastic set of cursors!
I'm using the default black set, but I may change to the yellow set.
I really like the fact that the cursors are partly transparent.
I also like the improved I-beam cursor that doesn't obscure the text, again due to transparency.
How long did it take you to create one set of cursors?
Thanks again. You are the coolest.

Well thanks. I consider myself as a very average person, so looking at the current poll I think I am double that sexy than cool ;-) (... so I'm kind of attractive, but I don't care...).
Regarding the time to create the cursors I would say it's 1/10 of creating/designing the cursors and 9/10 making them work. It took me some weeks of spare time testing-trying-scripting-README-testing... but it's fun.

I actually have one complaint with this scheme: it's too good. I end up wasting time staring at the cursor instead of getting my work done :/

I can't change into another scheme either, as they all pale in comparison... what a dilemma.

What a pitty. I must agree it's a kind of unhealthy theme - I ended up closing windows using the xkill command :P.

This theme doesn't seem to work on Ubuntu Dapper. First tried to use the GNOME theme to install. That didn't work. Then tried to unzip to .icons folder and switch mouse theme using the mouse preference. That didn't work. Then installed a Mouse pointer manager and tried to use it to switch, that didn't work either. Then tried to go to gconf-editor and manually do it, that didn't work either. Lastly, unzipped to the system wide folder. That seem to put the name in the Mouse preferences, but it didn't change the theme. It kept using the Human theme. Can't figure out how to get this recognized.

Nogo? You unpacked ComixCursors-0.4.1.tar.bz2 (not to but) in ~/.icons so you have a file ~/.icons/ComixCursors-White-Large/cursors/default ? That's where they want to be to appear in "gnome-control-center" mouse theme selection dialog. You did press the Apply or Confirm or whatever button ;-)? You can also use /usr/share/icons or /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons for system wide installation. Maybe a permissions problem? How does your ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/%gconf.xml read in the cursor_theme section? What's your xorg version?

Report

Horaaaay!! I got it working. Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I didn't understand the theme path and where exactly the folder should reside. These themes could really benefit from an easy HowTo section on this site within each section. Kind of like they do over at art.gnome.org.

I'm getting glitches in the cursor , the most often in firefox when loading something. What could cause that ? Is that a general issue ?

Report

C

jlue

What do you mean with glitches? And wich cursors, the black ones? Is it that there appear pixels that do not belong to the cursor?

Report

paleo

It happens with every color, every size. The cursor disappears and reappears rapidly between each frames of the animation. Static cursors are fine, but every animated cursors suffers from this problem.

Awesome cursors, by the way.

Report

Sounds like the animations get re-loaded with every tick. Are you a little short of memory? I never investigated it, but I would guess that the comixcursors consume a lot of memory. Something special with your X configuration, the graphics driver etc?
Cheers

Hi,

No, 1G of DDR667 is hooked to the system. I am using NVidia's driver. X.org doesn't include any special configuration, not even composite or renderaccel...

Report

C

jlue

Sorry, I have no clue what would cause these glitches. I am almost sure it is X related. You might try to mess with some of the nVIDIA flags in the driver... I suppose it happens with ComixCursors only, maybe related to pixel depth?
