ComixCursors

Cursors

Source (required if based on other people's work):

Description:

The original Comix Cursors.

X11 mouse theme with a comics feeling.
The package comes with 12 different mouse themes for X11.
6 colors (black, blue, green, orange, red and white)
2 different weights (slim and normal)

From version 0.8 on the cursors are 'multisize', meaning that you don't need to install one theme for each size, but only one theme, and chose the size in the cursor theme selection dialog.

The full installation also includes left-handed themes, you can choose whatever you prefer from the downloads below.

The cursors are named according to the freedesktop.org cursor naming convention, compatibility and hash cursor names are linked. In addition to the original cursor pack left-handed and opaque versions are still available here.

Please read the README and INSTALL files provided in the source package for installation and packaging instructions, as well as some hints on various issues.

"Vast" versions for visually impaired can be downloaded here: http://www.limitland.de/comixcursors.html . There are links for windows ports by firstfooter, teft and Jus on that page as well.

If you don't like the "hair" line for the text-, vertical-text- and crosshair-cursors, you can download the "NOHAIR"-sources below and replace the source files "text.svg", "vertical-text.svg" and "crosshair.svg" sources in the svg/LeftHanded and svg/RightHanded source-directories and build your cursors. These cursors might look better to you e.g. on dark backgrounds.

GNOME USERS:
------------
Ben has investigated how to configure the cursor size:

* Gnome supports multiple cursor sizes in one cursor theme, but only
distinct sizes: 16, 24, 32, and 48 pixels.

There is no known Gnome 3 application for setting the size of the mouse
cursor. You need to set the desired size in pixels as the value of the
DConf setting ‘org.gnome.desktop.interface.cursor-size’. You can use
‘dconf-editor’ (from the ‘dconf-tools’ package) or ‘gsettings’ to change
DConf settings.

ComixCursors come in sizes 32, 40, 48 and 64.

Hey guys!

I just found out that if you are using the cursors with compiz, you should, to change the cursors, change them in the

"Advanced Desktop Effects Settings"

and change mouse pointers to the ones you have installed!

Hey sensatul,
here's my howto:

You need to install the cursors first:
- Download the right- (or left-) handed rpm "ComixCursors-0.5.0-1.noarch.rpm", save it to your Desktop.
- Right-click it and install it by choosing "open with 'install software'" or similar.
- OR install it from a terminal by typing "rpm -Uv ~/Desktop/ComixCursors-0.5.0-1.noarch.rpm" .
- Open a terminal (choose it fro the start-menu or press ALTT-F2 and type 'xterm') and open the mouse properties dialog by typing "gnome-mouse-properties".
- Choose your preferred theme there. You will have to log out and in again to make full use of it.

If you want to download cursor themes as .tar.bz2 or .tar.gz files, you will have to unpack them, not install them:
- Download "ComixCursors-0.5.0.tar.bz2" to your Desktop.
- Open a terminal and type:
cd ~
mkdir -p .icons
cd .icons
tar -xjvf ~/Desktop/ComixCursors-0.5.0.tar.bz2
- That's for the per-user installation. Choose your preferred theme as above.

For system wide installation you would need to get root first and unpack the files in /usr/share/icons .

Have fun.

You say you are running "gnome-mouse-properties" (running gnome, right?) and don't have the "pointers" tab to choose your theme? You gnome must be broken. Best place to report the problem would be the ubuntu forums.
Read on this thread page 10 how to configure the mouse theme "by hand".

but it seems do not work.

Thanks for any help.

Hey there,

interesting that you got other themes working this way. That is you
# cd ~/.icons
# tar -xjf ~/Desktop/ComixCursors-0.4.3.tar.bz2
, right?
I know of two working ways that should make X11 load the cursors:
a) # mkdir -p ~/.icons/default . Make ~/.icons/default/index.theme read only:
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=ComixCursors-Ghost
b) symlink the default directory to the desired theme directory:
# cd ~/.icons
# mv default bak.default
# ln -s ComixCursors-Ghost default

Now this does not work on my distro though (SuSE). X11 under fluxbox seems to not process these configs here, but rather use the system default/fallback /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager , which reads:
X_MOUSE_CURSOR="ComixCursors-Ghost"
What's your distro? And which cursors do show up, the X11 "core" ones?

tripmix, you probably need to install inkscape and ImageMagick? Post:
- the full output of the ./install.bash command
- inkscape version ("inkscape --version")

This looks fine. You didn't set CURSORTRANS to 1.0 in the CONFIG, right? You are using default, downloaded files?
So which is you 'composite' command ("which composite", "composite -version")? Do you have a file "/tmp/tinted.png" after building? If so, how does it look like?
Thaks for your patience.

Hi, I compared with the human theme, and files like hand and hand1 are missing. I linked them at hand2.

hand1 is used by the search boxes with libsexy and probably by something else.

Well libsexy uses HAND2 since version 0.1.3. HAND1 is so very deprecated I have never seen it, even not on IRIX ;) .
But thanks for the hint anyways, I would love to see some of the exotic cursors like "gumby" or "shuttle" in action.

........
No I don't, I'd rather stick to the freedesktop.org cursor names suggestion.
