Description:

The original Comix Cursors.

X11 mouse theme with a comics feeling.
The package comes with 12 different mouse themes for X11.
6 colors (black, blue, green, orange, red and white)
2 different weights (slim and normal)

From version 0.8 on the cursors are 'multisize', meaning that you don't need to install one theme for each size, but only one theme, and chose the size in the cursor theme selection dialog.

The full installation also includes left-handed themes, you can choose whatever you prefer from the downloads below.

The cursors are named according to the freedesktop.org cursor naming convention, compatibility and hash cursor names are linked. In addition to the original cursor pack left-handed and opaque versions are still available here.

Please read the README and INSTALL files provided in the source package for installation and packaging instructions, as well as some hints on various issues.

"Vast" versions for visually impaired can be downloaded here: http://www.limitland.de/comixcursors.html . There are links for windows ports by firstfooter, teft and Jus on that page as well.

If you don't like the "hair" line for the text-, vertical-text- and crosshair-cursors, you can download the "NOHAIR"-sources below and replace the source files "text.svg", "vertical-text.svg" and "crosshair.svg" sources in the svg/LeftHanded and svg/RightHanded source-directories and build your cursors. These cursors might look better to you e.g. on dark backgrounds.

GNOME USERS:
------------
Ben has investigated how to configure the cursor size:

* Gnome supports multiple cursor sizes in one cursor theme, but only
distinct sizes: 16, 24, 32, and 48 pixels.

There is no known Gnome 3 application for setting the size of the mouse
cursor. You need to set the desired size in pixels as the value of the
DConf setting ‘org.gnome.desktop.interface.cursor-size’. You can use
‘dconf-editor’ (from the ‘dconf-tools’ package) or ‘gsettings’ to change
DConf settings.

ComixCursors come in sizes 32, 40, 48 and 64.

Love this absolutely wonderful cursor-theme. Great work, thanks! There is one very minor glitch that nonetheless drives me mad: if hovering over a link in Opera the cursor most of the time changes to the "open hand-symbol" (the one thats also used for moving) and sometimes doesn't change at all. Same hovering in Firefox,Konqueror, Thunar... always yields the correct "pointing-finger". Would be nice if someone could tell me how to make Opera behave like the rest. By

Hey there,
bug sometimes appears, sometimes not? Sounds like System Supporters dream ;-) . How did you install the cursors, and how did you make opera use them?
Is it possible to provoke the bug, maybe with css cursors? What about your X configuration, something special? Low memory, harddisk full? gfx driver?
It might be a broken link in the cursors installation, I doubt that you can change the behaviour in opera.

Hello again,
thanks for the fast response and your time. After all it's just a little quirk, nothing that stops the world from turning ;-)

Meanwhile i figured out one bug was in my brain: Firefox ALWAYS uses the right cursor and opera ALWAYS the wrong one over links (just confused the 2 progs in the beginning since my themes for both look very alike, sorry).

Regarding installation: at first i just unpacked the subfolders into /home/maroco/.icons/. Then i used the gnome-control-center -> Mouse-settings-tool to select one. Cursors already worked fine then in Gnome, also in Enlightenment and all progs i checked except for opera. I thought problem may be, that the cursors are only in the users directory, so i copied them to /usr/share/icons/*iconthemename* to make them available systemwide, but that didn't change anything. I then recalled someone told me Opera uses QT not GTK, so i thought problem may somwhow be KDE-related. Tried links in Konqueror then but there cursors work fine. Nonetheless I verified that the same cursortheme is selected in KControls Mousesettings as in Gnome.

Memory/harddiskspace: shouldn't be a problem since there are 1024 MB RAM and nearly 30-GB-free on disk here.

X-config: Some time ago I tweaked around with my nvidia-videodriver a little to enable hardware-3D for making Beryl work on my old Geforce2. Though I don't use Beryl anymore since its a little slow on my old machine and I meanwile fell in love with the Enlightenment-WM, Beryl is still functioning, so i guess that videodriver-configuration should be OK, too

I there are only 2 possibilities left:
1) one seldom-used link in your cursortheme may unintentionally be pointing to the "open-hand" instead of the "pointing-finger". I tried to check that, but have no experience at all with cursorthemes other then selecting them so I failed completely here. (Couldn't even figure out which file corresponds to which cursor in the subfolders... strange data-format there... or maybe i'm to dumb ;-)

OR

2) For some unknown reason opera might really insist on intentionally using the "open-hand-cursor". In that case..... thanks for your time and forget about everything, its operas fault ;-)

I hope its Pos.1) though cause then you could probably fix it ;-) If you need any more info/details i'd be happy to provide them, just ask. Jo, then have a nice day.
Bye

Me again ;-)
forgot to mention that i also let the "link-cursors.bash"-script run directly after unpacking subfolders to /home/maroco/.icons. Just in case you thought things are that easy ;-)

Hi MAroco,
right, installation seems to be good. It does not happen with my installation and opera though. I could only make opera use the cursors by making them the system default:
# grep X_MOUSE_CURSOR /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager
X_MOUSE_CURSOR="ComixCursors-White-Large-Slim"

So there are two possibilities,

(1): before launching opera - before that cursor can be cached - in a shell type "XCURSOR_DISCOVER=1". This will debug the cursors when they get loaded. Now type "opera &", and hover over a link to make that wrong cursor appear. Watch the shells output for an entry beginning with "Cursor hash ...". This cursor hash is linked to the wrong cursor file.
(2): beacuse there are only 4 cursors linked to the "all-scroll" cursor file (it is the former fleur or resize-all cursor name) you can just try-and-error re-link them.

In either way, assuming you are using the white-large-slim ones go to installation directory:
# cd /usr/share/icons/ComixCursors-White-Large-Slim/cursors .

Now there should be four links to all-scroll:

# ls -al | grep all-scroll
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Dec 1 09:04 5aca4d189052212118709018842178c0 -> all-scroll
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Dec 1 09:04 9d800788f1b08800ae810202380a0822 -> all-scroll
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9280 Jul 14 17:59 all-scroll
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Dec 1 09:04 fleur -> all-scroll
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Dec 1 09:04 plus -> all-scroll

You want to overwrite one of these links to the file "pointer":

# ln -sf pointer 5aca4d189052212118709018842178c0

Close and re-open opera and see wether you picked the rigth one or not. User the link-cursors.bash script to revert to the default links. Tell me wether you found the right link, so that I can update my packages and make them the *most complete cursors package ever*.

Not all of the different styles of cursors show up in the gnome mouse setting on fedora core 5. Only the small and large versions show up, but the regular and huge sized do not. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Report

I don't know why the rest of the cursors do not show up in the gnome-mouse-properties. If some show up, the rest will be installed too, and X11 will be able to use them. So you can change your preferences. Choose the White Huge cursor set (or whichever version you prefer) and then edit the file: ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/%gconf.xml
from "<stringvalue>ComixCursors-White-Large-Slim</stringvalue>" to "<stringvalue>ComixCursors-White-Huge-Slim</stringvalue>". Restart X11 (log out and in again) and enjoy.

gnome-mouse-properties only supports a fixed set of cursor sizes (12, 16, 24, 32, 36, 48). The variants that you are missing are 40 and 64.

I filed a bug report and submitted a patch, see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=402656 for details.

This sounds great. I look forward to seeing your patch in the next release of gnome. It's such a simple change, but I think it will greatly increase the useability of the mouse properties dialog. Gnome seems to get confused by the odd cursor sizes and puts them in the icon theme list. Is there anything in the theme file that differentiates icon themes from mouse cursor themes? I think another way to clean up the mouse cursor dialog would be to have each theme listed only once, then a dropdown or something where you could pick from the available sizes for that theme.

How come the installation path is /usr/share/icons? It's kinda annoying that the list of cursors (long one) shows up in the choice of icons theme

Report

The new installation path is chosen because of debian bug #362098, related to xorg 7 (there is no /usr/X11R6 in xorg 7). You might have to move ComixCursors* to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons if it does not suite your distro or desktop.
