Description:

The original Comix Cursors.

X11 mouse theme with a comics feeling.
The package comes with 12 different mouse themes for X11.
6 colors (black, blue, green, orange, red and white)
2 different weights (slim and normal)

From version 0.8 on the cursors are 'multisize', meaning that you don't need to install one theme for each size, but only one theme, and chose the size in the cursor theme selection dialog.

The full installation also includes left-handed themes, you can choose whatever you prefer from the downloads below.

The cursors are named according to the freedesktop.org cursor naming convention, compatibility and hash cursor names are linked. In addition to the original cursor pack left-handed and opaque versions are still available here.

Please read the README and INSTALL files provided in the source package for installation and packaging instructions, as well as some hints on various issues.

"Vast" versions for visually impaired can be downloaded here: http://www.limitland.de/comixcursors.html . There are links for windows ports by firstfooter, teft and Jus on that page as well.

If you don't like the "hair" line for the text-, vertical-text- and crosshair-cursors, you can download the "NOHAIR"-sources below and replace the source files "text.svg", "vertical-text.svg" and "crosshair.svg" sources in the svg/LeftHanded and svg/RightHanded source-directories and build your cursors. These cursors might look better to you e.g. on dark backgrounds.

GNOME USERS:
------------
Ben has investigated how to configure the cursor size:

* Gnome supports multiple cursor sizes in one cursor theme, but only
distinct sizes: 16, 24, 32, and 48 pixels.

There is no known Gnome 3 application for setting the size of the mouse
cursor. You need to set the desired size in pixels as the value of the
DConf setting ‘org.gnome.desktop.interface.cursor-size’. You can use
‘dconf-editor’ (from the ‘dconf-tools’ package) or ‘gsettings’ to change
DConf settings.

ComixCursors come in sizes 32, 40, 48 and 64.

Left Hand :)

It means left hand, so the pointers point towards the right instead of the left, for left handed people.

He explains in the text that it's Left Handed. ;)

I've got an 8-year-old nephew, and I saw these and though, "Hey, Kamren would love this!", I commenced download. I'm still in mid-download, but I'm giving a good rating!

hi,
you unpacked ComixCursors-0.4.2.tar.bz2 (not to but) in ~/.icons so you have a file ~/.icons/ComixCursors-White-Large/cursors/default ? That's where they need to be to appear in "gnome-control-center" mouse theme selection dialog. You did press the Apply or Confirm or whatever button ;-)? You can also use /usr/share/icons or /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons for system wide installation.

I don't know the internals of KDE so I am not sure whether it is your theme bug or KDE displaying bug -- use white theme version, open Konsole, change background color to black. The insert-text cursor is barely visible.

I think cursors should be 100% background independent.

Report

jlue

This might be due to the dark outline of the white cursors ;-) Pick the black cursors, change konsole background color or build a custom cursor set with an outline color of your choice using the sources.

i would like this even better if it was not slightly transparent. would be nice if there was a 100% opaque version. makes it hard to find the cursor on an lcd.

Report

me-macias

I agree for the same reason, I use laptop and I would like non-transparent version.

Also "huge" version -- 1.5 bigger than large. Resolutions are higher and higher, I use 1400x1050 and a bit bigger set would be great.

Besides, thank you Jlue.

Report

jlue

Right, I will add Huge ones in the next release. Will probably not add opaque versions, package size would grow too big. For opaque versions you will need to download the sources, have inkscape and ImageMagick installed, read README, edit CONFIG to read "CURSORTRANS=0.0" and "SIZE=64" and issue install.bash.

Hi,
I love this theme and would highly recommend anyone to use it.

I have been using it for a while now but now that I have upgraded to SUSE10.1 I have noticed that whenever there is activity, that is whenever the clock appears to denote something is loading it begins to flicker quite a lot.

This is very annoying and had caused me to stop using the theme for the time being. Could you please look into this as i love this theme and would like to continue using it?

Thanks
John

Hey there,
I upgraded to SuSE 10.1 as well, and am not experiencing ths problem. I bet it's your X11 configuration - using nVidia graphics card? Try to configure 'Option "HWCursor" "off"' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (thanks to eregorion). Complain to nVidia/ATI for proprietary driver code!

Any help?

Hi there,

# mkdir -p ~/.icons
# cd ~/.icons
# tar -xjvf ~/downloads/ComixCursors-0.4.1.tar.bz2 # wherever you downloaded it...

Then select your preferred mouse theme using

# gnome-control-center &

Yeah I tried that, didn't do anything, I read all the posts before I asked my question so not to look stupid.

Must be something with Dapper then.

Hmm, so did you unpack the cursors (in your home directory) as the actual user that is running your gnome desktop - you did not "su" or "sudo" before? Do you have a readable and not empty file ~/.icons/ComixCursors-White-Large-Slim/index.theme and ~/.icons/ComixCursors-White-Large-Slim/cursors/default ? The cursors are not showing up in the mouse theme selection dialog, right? Do the whiteglass cursors show up there? They are located in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons, try to unpack the archive in there - you will need to become root for that. ...
