Avio-GDM
GDM Themes
Score 76%
Description:

A hopefully good looking theme for GDM Greeter. Suitable for any resolution from 640x480 to 1600x1200. Should also be useable with widescreen displays.

The first picture shows the new version 0.9.2, the second is the older version 0.5. Plz tell me if you dont like the new version and of course why you dont like it :P

The background image is from Franziska Frannerts and you can download it from this location: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/stOrmgreen?content=35826

The third picture is from the experimental Avio-Sunshine-GDM, that features a lens flare effect. You should use at least a resolution of 1024x768 or it won't look good. I marked it as experimental, but it should be very usable, since it depends on the 0.9.2 version of the default theme.

Howto install it under Gnome (Ubuntu):

1. Download this theme (currently 0.9)
2. Open the "gdmsetup", also called "Login Window Preferences"
3. Open the tab "Local"
4. Use the "Add" Button and select the downloaded file.
5. Make sure you select the "Avio-GDM" in the List.
6. Close dialog and logout to see it.

Howto change the background image

1. Download the current version of this theme (0.9.2).
2. Extract it with the compression tool of your choice.
3. Navigate into the extracted folder and replace the "background.jpg" with the image of your choice.
4. Put it into a ".tar.gz" Archive again and you should have a theme with your own background. (plz don't change the directory structure)

I would prefere it also, but unfortunately there is no option available to do this by the theme.

The only way is an extension of the gdm-greeter itself. Maybe you can create a request for enhancment and puplish it to the developers of the greeter.

If this option is available already, then plz let me know, then i will fix it. ;o)

I am getting the same error. I tried dragging the tar.gz file into the themem manager window, and manually selecting it from the "install theme" button within the theme manager. Please advise.

QuickQuestion

Hey I really like your theme, but where can i find the wallpaper that was used in it?

Report

Inside the .tar.gz theme file, you will find a file called "background.jpg". This is the image that appears in the background.

You can change the background file by replacing "background.jpg" in the /usr/share/gdm/themes/Avio-GDM directory with the JPG image of your choice.

If the new image is not a JPG, simply move the file there, and modify the XML file, replacing "background.jpg" with the new file name.

Go to System > System Settings > Login Window. Authenticate yourself and you will be greeted by the gdmconfig frontend. Click "install" and search for the Tarball you downloaded here. Select it, press OK. The theme will be installed and appear in the available greeters list. Select its radio button. Close gdmconfig and either log out or open a new session/nested X-Server by selecting the appropriate option from Applications > System Utilities.

This is the most slick and tastefully done GDM theme I've seen. So good, that I didn't mind registering to thank you for the effort and to applaud the quality of your creation.

Keep up the good, no, great work.

Tank you!

If someone can tell me how to create a gtk theme, than i will create one that fits to this gdm theme.

Only looking at other themes will not give me the possibility to get the best out of it. So im searching for a tutorial to get into this stuff.

Hi tobain,

I installed your theme and I am very impressed with it. It's really a good work. Congratulations.

It would be awesome If you could make a GTK+ Theme matching with it as you said, so I've searched for a GTK Theme Tutorial and found this one:

Thank You.

Thank you very much ;P

Im not a professional, so it must be luck, that i had such an idea. It must be Inkscape, that made me such creative (OK, it helps to know how to programm and how to write XML-Files) :P

I use this theme and I like it, however if I select the user by clicking, it asks me for the password and after I write it, it asks me again.
If I type the username by hand, it works ok.

Report

Sorry, but this error must have an other reason. Normaly it works fine and you only need to choose the user and can directly type the password. A Theme also has not the ability to change this behavior.

The background is in the tarball as background.jpg, just extract it separately.

Does anyone have any icon sets that they recommend with this background?

Here's the screenshot: http://jessejoe.com/~jesse/Screenshot-Xnest.png

I was also wondering if there was a way for the height of that same box to shrink? I took some of the buttons out for less confusion for some users I have as seen here: http://jessejoe.com/~jesse/Screenshot-Xnest-1.png
