I've changed mine to

To take out "Now Loading" and just leave LINUX on that line. Reason, because when shutting down the text is wrong.

Hi.
Thanks for this splasn screen, I love it.
But I have a little pb: my splash screen (0.2 Alpha 1) is empty in the middle.
I have a black board, nothing inside.
No fingerprint inside or texte "now loading Linux...".
Juste two loading lines, up and down the board.
Have I done something wrong?

try this:

sudo gedit /etc/usplash.conf

set resolution to or whatever you set it to in the /boot/grub/menu.list

xres=1024
yres=768

sudo update-initramfs -u -k `uname -r`

Great!

Thanks for this answer but:

1st: it doesn't work, my splashscreen is the same;
2nd: when Grub is loaded, my logOn page doesn't come...

So no difference with before & a problem for logOn!
I can't open my session...

Argh!

Arf...

I try to boot with the recovery mode and, after restart, I finally could log me.
But the Black board still exists ;)

I am also having the same problem. I am using ubuntu 8.04 on a laptop with a screen at native 1280x800, but I did adjust the resolution.

I found some information that might be helpful here

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/usplash+fingerprint-remix?content=61395

but because I dont know how to edit a .so file I have no idea how to apply any of it.

I did everything according to the manual, then rebooted and got the black screen with the following message:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown -block (0,0).
How do I solve this problem?

ohhh god!.

i just installed this using the instructions given, but now when i boot i don't even get a splash, just a black screen.

i removed 'vga=791' or whatever number was listed in the instructions from the grub boot, but then it starts up with a a kernel panic - unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0).

So um....i am on Ubuntu 7.10(gutsy) and really like this splash screen. So much so that i have been scouring the internet all day for a way to make it work and not have that black box. So far, I have not found anything. Any chance we can get a build of this that actually works? Or has anyone actually gotten it work at all? Otherwise, i think that this should be taken off gnome-look.org because for n00bs like me, we only expect stuff that will actually work to be posted on this website.

I was having the same problems until I found the following and it worked:

Open you GRUB configuration file.

gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

To proceed, you'll need to know the framebuffer code for your desired resolution:

Code Resolution
vga=785 640x480
vga=788 800x600
vga=791 1024x768
vga=794 1280x1024

Find the line
# defoptions=quiet splash
and add your framebuffer resolution code, e.g. (for 1024x768)

# defoptions=quiet splash vga=791
(Don't "uncomment" the line - it only works when it is "commented".)

Save the file, then execute

sudo update-grub

Good luck!

That didnt work for me. Although that black patch appears after a nano second when the screen hits up, so i saw what was behind it. But the black patch is still there for the rest of the time.

What is the difference between non-quiet as opposed to quiet mode? I don't see a difference.

Report

JohnSearle

Quiet mode doesn't display the machines loading text, such as the various commands its running; whereas non-quiet displays them all.

If you're running quiet mode, you should only be seeing the loading bar, no text.

I asked the awesome coders behind usplash, add one of them told me this:

"Your question #22579 on usplash-theme-ubuntu in ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash-theme-ubuntu/+question/22579

kuwanger proposed the following answer:
I've looked at the source myself. It happens that usplash can use up to
two backends for drawing. One is drawing to the framebuffer, if it
exists. But, one can also compile in SVGA support, in case there
doesn't exist a framebuffer. As it happens, Ubuntu doesn't
automatically support the framebuffer--quoting /etc/modprobe.d
/blacklist-frambuffer:

"
# Framebuffer drivers are generally buggy and poorly-supported, and cause
# suspend failures, kernel panics and general mayhem. For this reason we
# never load them automatically.
"

Well, as it happens, only the framebuffer backend actually supports the
usplash_pixmap->tranparent feature. So, if you really want to have
tranparency in your theme, you have three major options: one, manually
load your framebuffer driver and get it working properly; two, alter the
svga usplash backend yourself to add the transparency support; or three,
try out my hack to include transparency support in svga
(http://kuwanger.net/usplash-0.5.7-svga-mask.diff) patched against
usplash v0.5.7, making sure to build with "BACKEND=ga make" to make
sure svga support is included along with the default framebuffer
support.

If you go with using my hack, please be aware that it is very much a
hack and released as-is. Instead of doing the right thing, it merely
takes advantage of something called gl_putboxmask. As a result, if it
happens that the video depth used is 16bit, all blacks in a transparent-
supporting pixmap on the screen won't be really black, just really
close. And if the video depth used is 8bit, not only will your
transparency color be transparent, but so will color 0 in a transparent-
supporting pixmap. There may be some clipping issues also, though I
haven't really looked into it to be sure.

Anyways, I hope this answers your question."

None of them see very appetizing, but for this awesome usplash...I'll try later. If someone else will post a deb package, that would be awesome.

A while ago I posted that I was getting a black screen when trying to use this screen under Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 AMD64. I was just recently able to fix the problem, using steps listed here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/86666/comments/104

And now I can use the bootsplash normally. I still have the black box problem other people have listed, but I haven't had time to try any of the suggested workarounds...

See here how to fix this

And please remove the last INSTALL instruction sudo update-initramfs -u FROM THE PAGE here (do not use this command at all its bugged)
