Gartoon Redux
Icon Themes
Score 77%
Description:

This is a massively improved variant of the well-known Gartoon theme, used by e.g. Edubuntu. Some work may also be based on the Gnutoon/Ubuntoon variant by reassuringlyoffensive. The theme is released under GPL v2 or later.

In the context of GPL, "source code" is interpreted as the SVG versions of the icons; this means that if you distribute Gartoon Redux icons or any derivative versions of them, you have to provide the SVG versions.

This package is also available in Ubuntu, though it may be slightly out of date. To install it, simply run:

sudo apt-get install gnome-icon-theme-gartoon-redux

At the moment, only the source version is available. To install, unpack in a suitable directory and run the following commands in the terminal:

./configure
make
sudo make install

To speed this up, you can use "make -jN" as the second command, where N is the number of hardware threads in your processor (e.g. "make -j4"), so that more than one SVG is rendered at the same time.

Hello!

I've found the following issue at my laptop (Ubuntu 8.04):

Power manager icon in systray falls back to Gnome default, if laptop is running on AC power with fully charged battery.
It seems, that it expects status/gpm-primary-charged.png(svg) icon, which is not in the set by default.

Adding links from gpm-primary-charged.* to gpm-primary-100-charged.* fixes the problem.

Hope it will be helpful for somebody.
(Also, it would be great to have this link in the original pack for easier migration to the next version ;) )

I modified the symlink definitions accordingly, this will be fixed in the next version. It looks like a Gnome 2.22 change that I missed out on due to a failing battery meter in my laptop. Thanks for pointing this out.

Really cool theme. I think you're the first I see who release the source and a makefile to rebuild the package. This is one of the things that make your work great.

Anyway I've sent you a message hoping you could help me on something related to GPL.

Thank you very much and good work.

Would you be so kind to make an inkscape icon? I'm learning to use it and I don't have the skills myself.
Thanks in advance

I had a shot at it but I wasn't satisfied by the result at all. I have one more idea I'll try but I don't know what the result will look like, so GR may stay without an Inkscape icon for some time.

Download the source package, and make the tar package from there and use that. That one is without the logo.

These are simply the best icons I have come across. I loved Gartoon and now with the redux version they are even better!

What would be nice though would be to have a generic chat client icon for Emesene or aMSN perhaps?

These icons are great. There are a couple of icons that don't work now in GNOME 2.22 though (on Ubuntu Hardy). These are:

config-date (is now time-admin)

updates-notifier (is now software-update-available)

Adding in some symlinks fixes the broken icons.

hello! I've "found" a great ubuntu logo which perfectly match with *toon themes. See here :

http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/profile.php?id=10822

I personnaly use it (modified, without the face inside) and I think you may ask him if you can use it in your icon theme...

Regards,

Sallé

OK, something similar to this is in the 1.5 release. Similar logos for Edubuntu and Xubuntu are in the source package.
