GNOME-colors
Icon Themes
Description:

This is an extensive set of icon themes based on GNOME and Tango, with some inspiration from Human, Tango Generator, Elementary, and other open source projects. The project's goal is to integrate closely with gnome-icon-theme, while greatly expanding its available icons and allowing users to choose from 7 completely different and unique color schemes. With the additional source pack, an unlimited number of complete color variations can be rebuilt from source.

The icons and their color schemes are designed to complement my Shiki-Colors GTK Themes and their additional artwork.

There are 7 color variations: Brave (Blue), Wise (Green), Human (Orange), Noble (Purple), Wine (Red), Dust (Chocolate) and Illustrious (Pink).

GNOME-Colors consistently themes 99% of default icons + 1000's more in almost every popular linux distribution. Every single icon included in the set is drawn perfectly at each and all sizes, so you will never have to see a blurry icon ever again!

Important, must read or clowns will eat you:
* To install, drag and drop the .tar.gz file into GNOME's Appearance Preferences, or extract it and copy the gnome-* folders to /usr/share/icons as administrator (i.e. sudo nautilus /usr/share/icons in Ubuntu). The gnome-colors-common folder is a required dependency. You MUST install it in order for all the icon sets to work correctly.

* You may alternately use the included Makefile for system-wide installation, just type make install as administrator or make user-install for per-user installation. For more options, type make help.

* You may want to install the 'extras-gnome-colors' package for extra icon themes (Liferea, Comix, Exaile, etc.) by following the instructions in the readme.

* If you installed the icons through the appearance preferences, for the icons to theme root/admin applications in Ubuntu, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install gnome-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Changelog:

GNOME-Colors depends on the package "gnome-icon-theme". If you don't use GNOME, make sure you have it!

5.5.1 (2009-10-28)
* Add icons for Empathy.
* Add better support for Ubuntu Karmic's panel applets.
* Minor updates and clean-ups on some icons.

5.5 (2009-09-25)
* New, redesigned folders!
* Add folder-xdg icons for Karmic/GNOME 2.28.
* Add some new icons/update others for better Karmic support.
* Minor bugfixes.

It's very recommended to remove any existing version before upgrading!

You MUST install "gnome-colors-common" as well! otherwise you'll have a broken icon set and clowns will eat you.

Looks like a 16x16px globe should work for that. I'll add it to the extras.

In case anyone's interested, I made a fun little extra color-scheme for gnome-brave.

It makes gnome-brave look more like gnome-icon-theme (the default gnome icon set).

It only has recolored folders and actions, and inherits the rest of it's icons from gnome-brave, so you need that installed for this to work.

It's a nice alternative to those who like blue, but not too much blue. It is however, just for fun and not part of the main project, it's just a little extra, unsupported add-on:

Get this updated version instead, it fixes some minor emblem positioning and is better packaged:

http://gnome-colors.googlecode.com/files/extras-gnome-tribute-2.tar.gz

If you also get the newly uploaded gnome-colors, you'll get nicer desktop icons - so they may not bother you any more, even if you don't inherit from wise.

Here's an action shot: http://img3.imageshack.us/i/scrot.png/

The only thing is not looking very good is desktop icon - it's definitely out from this set :/ But it's cool anyway :)

I'm trying to make new desktop icons. It's just about one of the last few 2-3 that don't look quite as right as they should.

Computer icon is one of them, I guess? (:

I like the new device and computer icons. The only ones I'm not really keen about are the current desktop icon, wireless icons, 32 and 48px volume icons, and few random application icons that almost no one sees.

Other than those exceptions, the included icons are all pretty much what they should be. I'm currently removing a ton of emblems that gnome-icon-theme already ships, so no need to have them twice. That free space can be better used for battery and power icons.

I was thinking about gnome-tribute icons - that computer icon doesn't fit it, same as desktop icon.

You are doing wonderful work and it's a shame that I can do nothing more, than just telling You that :/

Well, the gnome style is blue desktop/computer and tan folders.

You can, however, have any color you like... Just edit gnome-tribute's index.theme file in Gedit and change the "Inherits" line to another -colors set. If you prefer green devices, just change gnome-brave to gnome-wise in inherits.

Mate where is the Easy_tag icon?

Report

perfectska04

from issue 84:

I won't be adding back EasyTag
icons as the application hardcoded their own all over the place. If it was similar
icons it'd be alright, but the tag icons and EasyTag's were too different to have any
sort of icon consistency for that application - same with Picard.

The new Human palette is really nice. Much better than the other.

Well, I think you can include an icon to Iceweasel. I really like this icon: http://linko.es/PzN_

Also, two applications that many people use but have no icon are Asounder or WinFF.

Well, only ideas. I love your work and I hope you continue with it.

The problem with Iceweasel, is that like anything based on Firefox - it hardcodes their own icons everywhere, so it can't be fully themed outside of the extras package. Other than that, the icon you linked to is not available in all sizes, and one of the links is broken.

I'll look into Asounder or WinFF, if they don't hardcode icons and support theming it should be fine.

The following sticky is meant for missing icons or icon requests, just read the guidelines:

Like Benjamin mentioned above, do not upgrade to 4.3-0~ppa2. Instead wait for 4.3-0~ppa3!

You will have missing or broken icons all across. It's best to hold off on the update.

This bug only affects the PPA version, the regular .tar.gz package in the downloads section is perfectly fine.

For all other: Do not upgrade to 4.3-0~ppa2. Instead wait for 4.3-0~ppa3!
