Same problem as others. Trying to add the themes using System Settings gives the result "not a valid theme". I managed to add the themes by manually extracting the theme folders and copying them to /usr/share/icons. However I now have two problems:

1. I cannot copy the customisation files to /usr/lib as that folder is locked, even as root.

2. Some small icons simply do not work, for example if I open Clementine the system tray icon is white as it should be, but the small icon on the task bar and the one at the top left of the Clementine title bar are still orange. I have deleted my icon cache and rebooted but no difference. Can anyone help please? Thanks. - Feb 05 2013

Nicest dark theme I've ever tried. Would be perfect except for the problem of disappearing text when renaming files, which I can live with. Many thanks for all your hard work on this beautiful theme.

Hi, and many thanks for the comment - I'm very glad you like the theme. The 1280x1024 version is done but it is stuck on my desktop machine which is broken. I hope to replace the motherboard in a couple of days and I will upload the theme then. Sorry for the delay but it will be here soon :)

Regards,
green.

Hi Robert,

Many thanks for the comment, glad you like it. Certainly I will do a 1280x1024 version for you. In fact I had planned to have all the resolutions by now but my desktop broke down on Friday (looks like the mobo boohoo!!!) and I won't have it fixed until Tuesday most likely. If you don't mind waiting a little longer I will upload asap.

Regards,
green.

Hi Tom,

Delighted you enjoyed my theme and many thanks for the comments. The source is there for you now. I can't be annoyed with cars of any description LOL, but I liked the picture in this case and just had the idea for the bar.

Cheers,

Hi, no probs - it's there now. The image files are in /usplash-theme/usplash-theme-ubuntu_0.19.tar.gz/usplash-theme-ubuntu-0.19

Please note the difference in the names of the tar file (ubuntu_0.19) and the folder within it (ubuntu-0.19).

Hi there, and thanks to you also for the feedback. I'm very sorry the theme didn't work for you. I hadn't been able to try it on anything other than my 1280x800 laptop. But over the last few days Ive tried it on two 1280x1024 monitors. It worked on one but not the other.

I have recompiled the theme using a different method and now I got it working on all three systems. I had to change my settings as follows:

Laptop (native 1280x800): startup-manager 640x480; usplash.conf 1280x800

Monitor 1 (native 1280x1024): startup-manager 1067x768; usplash.conf 1067x768

Monitor 2 (native 1280x1024): startup-manager 800x600; usplash.conf 800x600

So do try various settings. Please let me know how you get on. Thanks and sorry again for the problem :)

Hi there. And thanks for the feedback - its good to get it even if its to tell me the theme doesn't work. I'm very sorry you've had problems.

Until a few days ago I hadn't been able to try it on anything other than my 1280x800 laptop. Since then Ive tried it on two 1280x1024 monitors. It worked on one but not the other.

BUT I have recompiled the theme using a different method and now I got it working on all three systems. I had to change my settings as follows:

Laptop (native 1280x800): startup-manager 640x480; usplash.conf 1280x800

Monitor 1 (native 1280x1024): startup-manager 1067x768; usplash.conf 1067x768

Monitor 2 (native 1280x1024): startup-manager 800x600; usplash.conf 800x600

So its well worth fiddling around with those settings. Please let me know how you get on. If no-one complains then I don't know it needs fixed LOL. Thanks and sorry again for the problem :)

Great - its pretty basic LOL, but it looks nice. Glad you like it Davide :) - Jan 13 2009
Hi. If you want the photo as it appears in the Usplash (ie with the text etc) its included in the pack. If you want the unadulterated photo then its here: http://freedomwallpaper.com/Gallery%20Nature%201/5.jpg. You will find some beautiful wallpapers there ;) - Jan 08 2009
Hi there. Hmm, I thought it should work in Xubuntu but I might be wrong. Do you get an error message when you try to add it in startup-manager, or does it appear to be added ok but just not work? And what is your screen resolution (native and what is set in /etc/usplash.conf)? Sorry for all the questions? - Jan 08 2009

Sorry for all the posts - every time I refreshed my page listing AFTER I'd added the comment it added another one LOL.

OK I've made a brand new version of the theme which I now have working on all three of my systems. It's just a matter of finding the combination of res settings that works for you (see my examples in the Changelog above).

Please try this new one and see if you can get it to work. If not I'll have another go.

Cheers :)

Hi and very sorry you can't get it to work. Although the example theme on which this one is based was clearly written for 1024x768, the point I made in my description was that, strangely enough, it works perfectly for me on a 1280x800 widescreen laptop with no adjustments necessary. As youve obviously now discovered its NOT working for you on a monitor it SHOULD be working on LOL.

BTW, until the last two days, ie since I saw your comment, I had never tested it on any other resolution but 1280x800 - that's why I included the source so anyone who wanted to try it with another res could compile their own. You will see that Ive now updated the theme to include more resolutions. But Im not confident this one will work for you either Im afraid.

The reason I say that is as follows. Since I saw your comment I've spent literally hours compiling and trying different configurations of this theme on two Samsung monitors - slightly different models but the same native res of 1280x1024. I can't get the theme to work on one of them at all. I can get it to work on the other one with boot splash res set to 800x600 in startup-manager (this is the only setting that will show the usplash) and usplash res of 800x600 in /etc/usplash.conf (this one is necessary to get the shutdown usplash to display properly). BUT the image looks pretty crap on the screen.

I'm starting to think this depends as much on the capabilities of the monitor as on the usplash settings. On this 1280x1024 monitor, ie the one where it works, if I set the boot splash res to anything above 800x600 in startup-manager, when I reboot I'm told the resolution isn't available and I'm given a list of resolutions which only goes up to 800x600. I think my monitor just doesn't have the capability to go any higher in boot mode.

I know thats not been much help. Try the new one and do try every available setting in startup-manager before giving up. Oh and make sure any time you change the settings in /etc/usplash.conf you run

sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash

Good luck and please let me know how you get on. If no joy I'll try with different source code (I get exactly the same behaviour with the "original" smooth theme on which this one is based on all my machines).

All those downloads and no comments? This is an awesome GDM theme - what a lovely bright way to start a Gnome session. Thanks for this Davide, and thanks for your links to these great wallpapers btw. You inspired me to come up with a Usplash using this one. Hope you don't mind me stealing your idea ;) You can see it here:
