in the apearance dialog under interface you can set the menus to not show icons, the tasks just look so clear cause the icons are the same color as the panel, that's about it...remove all launchers
oh and yeah the notification area is hidden in a drawer with a transparent icon (the lil arrow next to the clock) - Mar 14 2008

its done with a plugin called mystatusbox

the icons are located in /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin
