Weel thanks to adamantis who gave me this idea to realise a completely transparent theme (see his darkness theme).
For my own part, I prefer light themes, so I work a little around this.
You can find everything here to activate full transparency with RGBA true :

1. set the panel colors trough gnome color
chooser and use the murrine engine as global
2. use a solid color as background color for your gnome panel and set the same color and opacity as you've choosen trough gnome color chooser.
i hope this will help you. It takes a while to tweak all untill it fits fine.

Well, you're right. Things are going the right way with gtk and we all have to work, creating new themes, clear or dark ones, to fit everybody's wishes.
I'm not very satisfied of my buttons (low definition) I'll try to make better ones. If you've got any other ideas, tell me.
Cheers !

I'm seeking for how to make a tar.gz from my settings.
If you wish I can send you my xml file with the gnome-color-chooser settings and tell you where to copy.

Anyway, you can make your own using the scipts for rgba true and use gnome color chooser to set the options as you like.
