This is the Clearlooks Metacity theme.

0.6 Update:
Added Clearlooks-Balloon (all rounded) and Clearlooks-Sharp (all squared).

0.6:
- Window icon is now fixed-size (no blurring).
- Slightly smoothed out the titlebar gradient.

0.5.2a:
- Fixed the tarball, so you can install via drag and drop again. Sorry about that!

0.5.2 (the "double-edged" release):
- Square bottom corners.
- Square utility windows.

0.5.1:
- Unfocused titlebars are less dark.
- Tweaked the prelighting.

0.5:
This is a major rework. If you liked the original Industrial-modification, you better make a backup of it. ;) The changes are:
- More advanced titlebar gradient, which looks softer and is also less bright, so it works well with bright themes like the new Ubuntu Human.
- New buttons which look quite a lot more like normal Clearlooks buttons.
- Unfocused windows do not look insensitive anymore.
- Utility windows have a smaller titlebar.
- The one-pixel padding below the titlebar is gone, this will look fine with the tweaked menubar in Clearlooks 0.5.
- Considerably better performance according to the Metacity benchmark tool.

First Release:
Differences to the last version included in Clearlooks 0.3 (Gtk engine) are a more rounded look for the buttons, slightly smaller icons and some minor fixes.

BTW, while I think that the original wasn't good work and don't want to offer it for download anymore, I'm not stopping anyone from re-releasing it (just under a different name please).

Download the latest version. ;)
Only utility windows are totally squared. If you want all windows to be square, you have to make some simple modifications to the theme XML file.

Yeah, sorry about that. Now that I think about it, the new titlebar gradient, although subtle, really does make for a nice upgrade. However, the new buttons are definitely keeping me from using you're latest work.

Excellent work nevertheless...even if I'm not a big fan of the new buttons. :)

Is this intentional? You can see it in the screenshots, and it's happening here of course. About 2/3 from the bottom of the titlebar it is dark, like the bottom but lighter. My eyes are caught by it everytime I look at it. I ask because I can't see this as much on my 4.5 year old 'darker' monitor but it is easily seen on my 2 month old Samsung.

That's actually an optical illusion. The new gradient goes like this: light, medium, medium, dark. So there is a medium colored area in the middle, enclosed by light and dark gradients at the top and the bottom. Now our eyes pretend that the part of the middle area that is near the top gradient is darker, because of the contrast to the light gradient.

So yes, this is intentional. :) It might be unusual, but I really like this look, because it creates some kind of soft material impression.

I like the buttons btw, you did good! They are just what I was looking for and was in the slow (I have no time) process of recoloring System-3.1. Now I don't have to finish it :D

there are constant changes in this theme, some for the better, some for the worse. well, it does look very nice but i am wondering if with all these changes, it somehow develops into a plastik or winxp-theme clone. it is becoming less and less original imho. the previous versions (0.1-0.4) were more unique imho.

oops sorry... i thought it was a rework of the gtk-theme... shame on me...
but the critics remain for the gtk-theme.

We don't give a damn if the theme is unique or not, we just try to make it as good as possible. If we'd believe that either Luna or Plastik would be perfect, we'd probably just clone them. :P But we don't.

hehehe... the funny thing is that before it WAS unique imho. i do respect your opinion and you are doing a good job at making this theme bug-free, easy to use and easy on the eyes. i am only a bit afraid that it develops into a plastik-clone, which would be a pity because there is already a plastik-like style. this comment is not meant as some way to negatively critizise your hard work. just a reminder, not to let yourself draw away into a design we already have. after all, it is about choice, right? ;)

This is not about choice at all, it's about a great looking desktop. But I have really no idea what makes you believe that it suddenly looks like a Plastik clone.

Oh and 0.5 isn't even released. WTF do you think that 0.5 looks like a Plastik clone, when we made almost no visible changes to it and you couldn't even test it yet? :P

what makes me think it looks like plastik? the buttons e.g. and now, the windeco reminds me more of win-xp. i am not saying that plastik is a bad style (it is actually the best one for kde imho), but somehow, the 0.3 version was better FOR ME.

because 0.4 button widgets look a lot like plastik? I have avoided this 'plastik' discussion on every forum/news...whatever. You say it is about a good looking desktop. Isn't that enough? There's a reason Plastik is/was so popular, no? Does anyone think that MS just threw it's gui together at random? Did they call joe_blow to design its interface? Hello!

Early Clearlooks wasn't original either, just original to linux, as it inherited some original Bluecurve designs, but the 'Bluecurve' it inherited was not pleasing to the eye and not of good interface design for usability.

I look forward to 0.5, yet keep the older tarballs. Thx for the hard work, whether I like it or not!

I liked the 0.4 version much better. Hope that theme will improve in some way or another :/

I'm not sure if it's just my box or not but when I installed Remenic's Clearlooks 0.3 gtk theme and then used it with your metacity theme, I lose the default color scheme for Clearlooks. I only have "Deepsky" and "Olive" in the controls list. Is there some kind of naming conflict going on?

I realize your metacity theme is now including in 0.4, but I like 0.3 better but can't use your metacity theme because I lose the default Clearlooks color scheme. Any ideas?

I had the same thing happen. I installed the v0.5.0 of the gtk theme and had all 3 themes. Clearlooks, Deepsky and Olive. i then installed the metacity theme and the gtk theme 'Clearlooks' disappeared. Naming conflict perhaps?

Yeah, I noticed that this happened when my father installed the Metacity theme using the theme manager. He's still using GNOME 2.8 and I can't reproduce it with 2.10, so it was probably fixed.
A work-around might be to move the Clearlooks/metacity-1 folder manually into either /usr/share/themes (or .themes/ if that works). Or even rename it before installation.

Great theme. I love it. I wish it to be Redhats default theme.

But with a couple issues below:

I found a bug in bevel_maximized has a brighter highlight than the bevel highlight. Or it could be the other way around.

I actually prefer the highlight in the bevel_maximized however because its more visible. It looks good and familiar to the Indubustrials/Industrial/Human/Glider highlight which are all awesome and many like.

Another issue I noticed is that to the top-right of the window, at around title_height+4 where the vertical gradient ends, when a focused window is against a dark background you notice a sharp cut off. Like missing pixels but its all there, its just too dark. It bleeds into the background. Solution would to remove the shadow/midtone right there. The right black vertical line is good enough.

Thanks for making it look awesome.
