This is an extensive set of icon themes based on GNOME and Tango, with some inspiration from Human, Tango Generator, Elementary, and other open source projects. The project's goal is to integrate closely with gnome-icon-theme, while greatly expanding its available icons and allowing users to choose from 7 completely different and unique color schemes. With the additional source pack, an unlimited number of complete color variations can be rebuilt from source.
The icons and their color schemes are designed to complement my Shiki-Colors GTK Themes and their additional artwork.
There are 7 color variations: Brave (Blue), Wise (Green), Human (Orange), Noble (Purple), Wine (Red), Dust (Chocolate) and Illustrious (Pink).
GNOME-Colors consistently themes 99% of default icons + 1000's more in almost every popular linux distribution. Every single icon included in the set is drawn perfectly at each and all sizes, so you will never have to see a blurry icon ever again!
Important, must read or clowns will eat you:
* To install, drag and drop the .tar.gz file into GNOME's Appearance Preferences, or extract it and copy the gnome-* folders to /usr/share/icons as administrator (i.e. sudo nautilus /usr/share/icons in Ubuntu). The gnome-colors-common folder is a required dependency. You MUST install it in order for all the icon sets to work correctly.
* You may alternately use the included Makefile for system-wide installation, just type make install as administrator or make user-install for per-user installation. For more options, type make help.
* You may want to install the 'extras-gnome-colors' package for extra icon themes (Liferea, Comix, Exaile, etc.) by following the instructions in the readme.
* If you installed the icons through the appearance preferences, for the icons to theme root/admin applications in Ubuntu, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root
* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install gnome-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.
* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/
* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

GNOME-Colors depends on the package "gnome-icon-theme". If you don't use GNOME, make sure you have it!
5.5.1 (2009-10-28)
* Add icons for Empathy.
* Add better support for Ubuntu Karmic's panel applets.
* Minor updates and clean-ups on some icons.
5.5 (2009-09-25)
* New, redesigned folders!
* Add folder-xdg icons for Karmic/GNOME 2.28.
* Add some new icons/update others for better Karmic support.
* Minor bugfixes.
It's very recommended to remove any existing version before upgrading!
You MUST install "gnome-colors-common" as well! otherwise you'll have a broken icon set and clowns will eat you.

I just wanted to throw the idea out there since you mentioned new icon sets.

The good thing, is that all the work I've put into making many icons color-neutral lets me create a new icon set in about 8 hours, as I've done these past few days.
So next time I have 8 hours free to myself, you may see a new and complete Pink or Aluminium variation.

Now we have six choices... as many as the number of the colors in the "start-here" icon !!!

I'll just rename the poor 1-day old Dust to Caramel and leave it as an unsupported freebie.

I'd not use the name "Dust" 'cos it could get the idea it's in a way linked to the theme.
P.S.: Now you have to redraw the "start-here" icon... seven iconsets... seven petals!!!

There are still just 6 icon sets, though... I'm just going to drop the Dust that came with 4.0 as I wasn't truly happy with it. I'll probably just upload it somewhere for archiving or in case anyone wants it, and then forget about it.

I haven't read carefully about your purpose for the "Caramel" iconset... pardon!!!
You could add that as a separate iconset as you did for the "extra" or could up here on GnomeLook as "new" artwork.

I just took the old dust, renamed it caramel (so you can install it at the same time as the new dust). It's uploaded to mediafire for archiving or in case anyone prefers it, but it is not supported and will not be updated in the future.

Long story short, expect a brand new, more chocolate-y Dust version later tonight or early tomorrow.
If you like the current Dust icon color-scheme implementation, keep a copy of it! It will be entirely replaced with true chocolate colors.

Frugalware artwork team is very interesting by this icon theme.
Is it possible to add a start-here icon with Frugalware Logo ? (like already done with Ubuntu)
Here is a svg file

If you want to modify, add icons or redistribute gnome-colors with Frugalware icons, you can already do so without any worries!
If you want me to add Frugalware icons on my end... Well, I could add them, but I wouldn't have anywhere to place them. There's only one icon for distribution logos, so the generic pinwheel logo is used. If anyone wants to use their distro's default branding, they can just remove the pinwheel icon from gnome-colors and official branding will show up.

Thanks for this beautiful icon set. Since version 4.0, gtk-media-backward and gtk-media-forward are not colored (they used to be blue). I was more keen on a colored version to fit in with the colored play/pause and stop icons.
Thanks a lot for your work,

Although I do miss the color, it makes things look less cluttered, particularly in the human theme. The orange would stick out badly when media icons were placed all in a row.
I left play/pause/stop buttons colored for now as I didn't know how people would react to the recent changes... many colors have been moved around, so it can be hard to adjust. If people are comfortable with gnome-colors heading in a more aluminium/neutral direction, I'll change the rest of the media buttons to aluminium as well to avoid any inconsistency.

Record and Eject will remain red for easier recognition, though... Although I don't expect this to cause any inconsistency.

Or perhaps just add a new set and call it gnome-chocolate/dust?

I just managed to complete a new icon set called gnome-dust in only 8 hours. Shiki-Dust and Arc-Dust are also finished, I just need to GIMP the preview images with the new icons and I'll upload version 4.0 of gnome-colors.
I won't replace gnome-human just yet, since I managed to fit all 6 icon sets into only 21 MB. Not too bad.
