Description:

Marples is a (gtk2/3) theme, for those who like dark themes. the name marples is derived and pays homage to Marp-1-blue theme by Malys777. - Being as it was born out of that theme. Marples is ever evolving, and i am putting a great deal of effort into the details, and subtleties. i would say the theme is beta right now, but is coming along nicely. I'll probably consider it a good clean release by 2.0

*A quick disclaimer - i am working on this a little everyday, so changes happen fast. Once, i complete this theme, i will then remix it into a lighter marples theme :) *

D_A_I_L_Y_________
F_E_E_D__________

Gnome 3.2 broke Marples, so i am now in the process of fixing it (STILL!) ...lol

I've now changed this theme somewhat, for now there are very few borders, and i've been messing about' with the toolbar, which i will be revising. the menu is a little better now, and i got rid of some of the white frames, on various widgets.

Mutter now supports transparency, so everything should look similar to compiz, minus blur - which only compiz has, from what i can tell.

.cell is now a gradient. i've done this as 3.2 killed my sidebar gradient. in gnoe 3.0 the .sidebar and .cell weren't tied into each other, but that is not the case anymore :( . atleast i killed the frame :)

anyways, expect some more changes over the next few days.

* FIREFOX COLOR ISSUES:

Quick Note: A few people elsewhere were a little frustrated by firefox with dark themes, so i thought i should post about this - if you have issues with Firefox - text boxes being black, cant read text, etc...

..you'll need to access about:config (firefox config) in FF's addressbar, then type 'colors' in the searchbar... you can set firefox to ignore your theme colors, and/or specify your own colors ~ just open youtube in a separate tab (or other problematic sites), while you modify them to suit. it works like a charm :)

EXTRAS:

a few people have asked me for a couple of my GFX/logo/icons that i have made for gnome, they are available for download below, here is a quick run down of where they go, in the linux file-system;
____________________________________

* 1. Alien Gnome Logo
____________________________________

this file is called "side.png", and is used with gnome-system-monitor. Simply replace the existing side.png found here;

/usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-system-monitor/side.png
_____________________________________

* 2. Gnome-tweak-tool alternate logo
_____________________________________

the file is called "welcome.png. you must replace;

/usr/share/gnome-tweak-tool/welcome.png

with the new welcome.png file.

I use Archlinux, which allows me to stop future updates to both these files (so my logos never get replaced through an update ~ the NoUpgrade flag in pacman.conf). But i'm not sure how to do this in other distro's, so you are on your own, im sure it's possible though... ;)
___________________________________________________

*NEW* 3. Gnome-system-monitor 3.1.4 (dark remix, black graphs, other tweaks)
___________________________________________________

For this you will have to have GIT installed, and be willing to compile it because the colors are 'hardcoded', i have removed the cairo highlight tab crap... *my alien logo doesn't need to be downloaded seperately as it lives in my git branch. i have made other subtle changes to the source code.

steps from commandline;

1. git clone git://gitorious.org/gnome-system-monitor-blackgtk3/gnome-system-monitor-blackgtk3.git

2. cd into directory

3. ./autogen.sh

4. ./configure --prefix=/usr

5. make

6. sudo make install

enjoy ;)

a SHOUTOUT to the original author;

the original theme, Marp-1-blue was created by Malys777 found here;

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Marp-01-blue?content=143597

from that link you can find other themes made by him, as well as a link to his profile.

the great thing about Malys777's themes, is the use of pixmaps. one of the things that bothered me about gtk3 right off the hop, was the lack of available themes built around pixmaps. I'm glad Malys made his themes, they might be a little too colorful, a little 'busy' and not really my style, but awesome nonetheless, based on the code and his ideas.

ya, i already figured out the gtk2 menubar thing.

I'm gonna post an update on Marples in the next day or two, i made another theme called Blapple, from which i can merge the menubar fix, and a few other tweaks / fiexes over to Marples :)

i see. lol. ya, i'm working on it. But not all things look the same between gtk2 vs. gtk3. so it's tricky, sometimes.

oh, and i also have a new theme. it's not uploaded yet, it's a remix of marples (it's fairly different though). i have a few bugs to work out then i am going to upload it ;)

I've used this since you started and its one of the best
One observation when typing in a black box the typing is hard to see the password for this site comes to mind

thanks for the feedback, it's appreciated and i am glad that you like it.

about the web colors problem, if you are using Firefox, i have given 'rough' instructions above on how to deal with that. I don't use Chrome, but i would assume it either doesn't do that, or can be fixed in a similar manner.

youtube, Phoronix, gnome-look.org, etc can easily be fixed. the problem is that your browser is using your theme colors by default, but you can stop it from doing that, or put in your own custom color scheme.

none of these websites, have 'black-text'boxes' or any of that crap on my machines :)

Unfortunately, I've been having problems in Firefox. In some sites the text becomes almost invisible. Example: www counterpunch org. I'm using Fedora 15.

if that is the case, do as i suggest. (modify your colors in about:config) My Firefox is using all of the proper colors, text input fields are white, text is black, etc... they all look proper. :)

there have always been these kinds of issues with firefox using really dark themes, but it's not hard to fix (thankfully)

Sorry, I hadn't seen your suggestion, you know, TL;DR. :)

ya, i figured as much ;) I knew this issue was going to crop up for some people, so i preempted it...

it should only take you a minute or two to adjust things, i don't remember which ones off-hand, but they change in 'realtime' ~ so that's why i suggested opening youtube (and/or other websites) in other tabs to make sure it looks how you like.

...and I was just thinking last night how boring the grip was.. :)
I ditched gnome-shell and mutter.. blah! Gnome-shell has some potential.. it just needs a better window manager then mutter. Off to work.

Report

ya, i just wish i could get the grip to appear properly in gtk3. however, not really seeing the grip isn't to bad either. In gimp (gtk2) you can see it though (it's actually my signature).

about GS/mutter. unfortunately, Gnome-Shell is mutter only. the compiz developer tried to work with the gnome-devs, but they weren't into it. Gnome-Shell is alright, but it is feature lacking, and i hate dynamic workspaces. compiz gives me a lot more control over my desktop than GS/mutter ever will (i may be biased as a tablet user). lol

you'll have to checkout the latest revisions when you get home ~ i've changed the buttons. i'm getting rid of the Adwaita style buttons, and replacing them with buttons that match my theme. ;)

That's weird.. created an account 2 days ago and it got deleted! STRANGE! Anyway I have modded a few things. Scratched the whole cyan color and going with a blue (#00284c) to match your logos. It has a nice little transparent blue fading out over the .toolbar. Looks good, but far from done. Trying to help with the window transparency issue. I will post a couple of screen shots soon. I'm a little excited.. first time messing with gtk3

ya, something weird happened on gnome-look. i lost 2-300 downloads over night, it seems maybe the site was rolled back a couple of days. weird.

have you checked out the update with the new gtkswitch / slider buttons / ranges ?

i've also slimmed down gtk2 to match gtk3 more ;)

Report

I really dig the sliders!! I'm trying to figure out the window header and boarder transparency! It's there in the script.. I think that I'm going to switch over to compiz.
haha here is a few changes I made to your theme.. I have marples-black on my fadora 15 box and the one I'm playing with is on my lappy running Ubuntu natty,

cool, i had experimented with some similar dark pixmaps for the background.

Malys did a good job on setting up a pixmap theme, although, i am starting to add more, especially in gtk3 (such as the sliders/ranges/gtkswitch).

in compiz you will get rgba ~ but only a few apps, it's not universal, if you figure out a way around that, make sure you post it, please :)

the trick so far, is that your background, must have transparency. but remember - it's mainly gnome-system-monitor and terminal that will show it. i still haven't been able to get it to do more than that. (but i'm no theming genius). lol

nevermind about the scrollbars, it seems that that's an internal system issue :P
