Description:

NOTE:
======
Unfortunately, after years of Gnome3, even minor updates of GTK+ or Gnome-Shell break themes and waste hours of work.

GnomishDark is a clean dark theme for GTK3. It also contains a matching GTK2 theme, that depends on the latest Murrine and Pixmap engines.

*** Current Dependencies ***

GTK3 = 3.12.X (may not work with versions < 3.8)
gtk2-engines-murrine >= 0.98.1.1 (for GTK2)
gtk2-engines-pixbuf >= 2.24.10 (for GTK2)
Metacity >= 2.34 (for GTK2)

*** Notes ***

1) Ubuntu users could disable "overlay-scrollbar" if they want to have the original scrollbars of the theme. See https://help.ubuntu.com/12.10/ubuntu-help/unity-scrollbars-intro.html

2) Don't forget to take a look at the file "README" in the theme folder. It contains useful tips for LibreOffice, Firefox, Epiphany, etc.

3) You won't need the source package unless you want to modify the theme or make a deb or an rpm package from it.

4) Light monochromic icons go well with this theme. I've made the gray version of nouveGnome for it: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/nouveGnome?content=125474

First I loged out, there was no change, than restarted firefox also checked the process nothing has happened and after the box has been rebooted as well twice :)

I double check the copy and paste thingy.

One more quick question, do I need to copy the "userContent.css" to the firefox folder as well?

Hey,

I just found another little issue: The loading information is still blue as you can see here:

It is set to blue intentionally. That blue is the info color. Info, warning, question and error messages should be colored in my opinion.

Ok, Thanks. I was just a bit surprised to see something colored ;-)

You'll also see yellow and red in nouveGnomeGray. Colors in monochromic themes are the best tools for showing exceptions.

Hi,

your theme looks really really great, but I have a huge problem with Eclipse (eclipse.org). The design is awful as you can see here: http://abload.de/img/bildschirmfotovon201312r77.png
Do you know any workaround?

Best regards

I'm glad you like GnomishDark.

Alhough I haven't used Eclipse, I know it's in Java. Java apps can usually allow for three ways of theming: the default Java theme (mostly ugly); a GTK+ skin (which sometimes isn't designed for dark themes, as in your case); and internal color schemes. I think you could use the third way to change the color E2E2E2, which doesn't exist in GnomishDark. Google lead me to this site: http://marketplace.eclipse.org/content/eclipse-color-theme

Sorry for not reading the Arch-Wiki - here is the solution: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Eclipse#Eclipse_4.2.0_not_respecting_dark.2Fcustom_gtk_themes_resulting_in_white_background
Thanks for your help anyway :-)

Does gnomishdark work with linux mint, MATE desktop ?

Report

C

It should work on any Linux distro, including Linux Mint, because GTK+, Gnome and Shell are the same in all distros (although Ubuntu has made some changes to GTK+).

However, GnomishDark is still for Gnome-3.6 and GTK+-3.6. I've made changes for 3.8 but will upload the new version only after Gnome-3.8 comes into Debian Unstable (for testing).

I put gnomishdark in the ~/.themes folder. It shows up for selection in APPEARANCES-THEME

1) The white on yellow input box issues of SOFTWARE CENTER and SYNAPTIC go away :) No apparent such issues with FIREFOX.

2) Any text in the desktop panels is extremely small. Looks to be an 8, if that.

Other than the above (2), situation normal & nice ;)

Thanks a lot for testing on Linux Mint with MATE.

First of all, please put the theme in /usr/share/themes and see if the issues persist. Synaptic's issue may be related to installing the theme only for user; it has no problem here.

I don't have SOFTWARE CENTER on Debian but I hope its issue is related to installation as user too.

As for MATE, if it uses the GTK+ part of GnomishDark, there's only a gnome fallback mode in it, where no font size is set at all.

But if MATE uses the Cinnamon theme, please change "font-size: 10pt;" to "font-size: 12pt;" in the" #panel" block of cinnamon.css and see if it has any effect after logging out/in.

Your reply will be helpful to me.

I moved the gnomishdark from ~/.themes to /usr/share/themes and rebooted

No input box white-on-yellow problem with synaptic nor software manager

firefox browser seems to be okay, too.

Linux Mint Cinnamon is different desktop UI from MATE. There is also XFCE choice to use with Linux Mint.

google.com [SEARCH] input box now has WHITE on WHITE and affecting log-in. That is the only glitch I find.

I'll study MATE as soon as I have free time and will tell you about the result.

For Firefox, see the file README in the theme folder. Firefox has issues with all dark themes but the solution is explained in README.

Except for the MATE case, I'm happy to know that GnomishDark works well on Linux Mint. Thanks again :)

Okay. Thanks for reply.

I am not happy with Ubuntu UNITY and GNOME3 desktops and so am switching to Linux Mint with MATE.

One secondary box I have Linux Mint 14 installed for practice, etc. It is more like GNOME2.

I will install gnomishdark theme on that and see what happens !! LOL I'll give you feedback.

...hey - since you are offering files to compile i suppose you know what to do if you wanna create your own style. i mean not only customizing the 'css files, but to use engines and apis. can you tell me some links how to learn this? - some tutorials? to understand it all from the root? that would be nice!

Hi,

Although I left Gnome, I changed my decision about deleting this page. Updates will come, although not as often as before. (I changed the top note too.)

If you want to learn how to make GTK+ themes, you couldn't rely on tutorials because many of them are out of date and there's no comprehensive tutorial as far as I know. There are two ways, however: (1) using the source of Adwaita as a basis and experimenting with it in a trial-and-error way; or (2) learning GTK+ programming. For the latter, there is a good reference, namely libgtk-3-doc, which can be found in the repositories of all distros (probably with a different name), and also there are some good books and tutorials you could find on Internet.

I understand your frustration, but ask that you reconsider deleting your themes.

Someone may pick up the torch. They are too nice, and you've invested too much time, to just make them disappear.
