Description:

NOTE:
======
Unfortunately, after years of Gnome3, even minor updates of GTK+ or Gnome-Shell break themes and waste hours of work.

GnomishDark is a clean dark theme for GTK3. It also contains a matching GTK2 theme, that depends on the latest Murrine and Pixmap engines.

*** Current Dependencies ***

GTK3 = 3.12.X (may not work with versions < 3.8)
gtk2-engines-murrine >= 0.98.1.1 (for GTK2)
gtk2-engines-pixbuf >= 2.24.10 (for GTK2)
Metacity >= 2.34 (for GTK2)

*** Notes ***

1) Ubuntu users could disable "overlay-scrollbar" if they want to have the original scrollbars of the theme. See https://help.ubuntu.com/12.10/ubuntu-help/unity-scrollbars-intro.html

2) Don't forget to take a look at the file "README" in the theme folder. It contains useful tips for LibreOffice, Firefox, Epiphany, etc.

3) You won't need the source package unless you want to modify the theme or make a deb or an rpm package from it.

4) Light monochromic icons go well with this theme. I've made the gray version of nouveGnome for it: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/nouveGnome?content=125474

I dig the theme, but have found an issue hoping you can help me out. Google image search has a select box for larger than. When I hover over it everything goes white on the left hand side. Any ideas how I can modify the css to fix this?

Thank you for your comment.
I suppose you have created/changed userContent.css according to README and have installed all GTK2 dependencies.
I don't see any whitening of the left pane of Google Image on mouse-over. However, Firefox has a problem with that pane, which is independent from the theme. I have Firefox 16.0 and see a useless scrollbar and a jumpy movement of that pane on mouse-over with any theme. It doesn't happen with Chromium.

It doesn't seem to work with 3.6... am I doing something wrong? I extracted it to ~/.themes/ and switched to it using the Tweak Tool. No luck.

Hi,

It DOES work with 3.6 because I've made it for 3.6 and tested it in both Fedora and Ubuntu.

You haven't done anything wrong. But you didn't tell me what happened after switching to the theme. I need that info for being able to help you.

I switch the GTK+ Theme / Current Theme to GnomishDark. The GTK+ theme makes the dropdown menus really ugly, changing the current theme does nothing (my window decorations stay the same). When I do an alt+F2 "r", the window decorations change to "Simple"

Here's a screenshot. http://imgur.com/7yxnz

It's not only your theme that does this (although the GTK+ Theme looks particularly bad with this theme) - about half my themes won't change the window decorations.

OK. Supposing that you use Ubuntu, have you upgraded it to the latest Quantal Beta? You need the latest gnome, gnome-shell, etc.

Report

yeah this is gnome-shell 3.6.0-0ubuntu. Could it be because I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04?

Report

If your Ubuntu is fully updated to Quantal Beta now, I'm afraid your guess could be right: something wrong should have happened during transition. In that case, I recommend you wait until Quantal becomes stable.

I don't think so.

Are you in gnome-shell or in Unity now? If you aren't in gnome-shell, install gdm with Synaptic, accept it as your default display manager during installation, log out and log in into gnome-shell. Does the same thing happen?

Yeah this is with gnome-shell and gdm is already my default display manager. It works fine on Unity.

Looking good and stylish like always. The theme has a good idea and a very good practical application of things. Keep up the good work.

Please read the file README in the theme folder! Its "Firefox" section will fix your problem.

Such a thing should be done with Firefox when any dark theme is used.

Hi!
Thanks for this awesome theme! It looks really cool!
I am wondering if anyone found a workaround for the Ubuntu Software Center... it really looks off.
Thanks!

BTW, doesn't this fix the issue:

Hi!
Thanks for your answer.
My softwarecenter.css already have the first two lines like the ones they show in that post:

@define-color light-aubergine #DED7DB;
@define-color super-light-aubergine #F4F1F3;

I never edited that file, and I did a fresh install, so I guess they fixed that upstream. So unfortunately the issue remains.
I am more than happy to help you to test your solutions.
Thanks again!

Hi,

I think you misunderstood that post. They say that you should change those (default) light colors to some dark ones of your choice. Would you please test that? If the effect is positive, I'll add it to README. It would be a great help because I can't test Ubuntu Software Center in Debian (it crashes instantly).

Sorry, I totally misunderstood it. Could you please tell me the codes of the colors you used in the theme? I would like to try to make it look as good as possible!
Thanks!

Thank you very much, Marcelo. I'll include the correction in README with the next version of the theme.

BTW, the gray font may be #8E8E8E.

Ubuntu 12.04/Precise i386 Gnome Classic (no effects) Metacity window manager

Edit of /usr/share/software-center/ui/gtk3/css/softwarecenter.css worked for me to change the white on yellow.

I'm still looking to change the synaptic white on yellow tooltip colors. Minor issue.

This GnomishDark is an **excellent** theme !!

Thanks !!-)

You're welcome!
I had tried changing the color here:

.cellrenderer-avgrating-label {
color: #8E8E8E; /* dark gray */
}

to white, but it didn't work... so I guess it's somewhere else...
Maybe someone running Ubuntu with more knowledge than me can take a look at it!

In GnomishDark, the main background color is #3B3B3E. There's also a less dark color #4D4D4D used for notebook backgrounds, for example. Please tell me the result!

Hi!
This is the content of the file as I have it. I does make the Software Center look much nicer. The only problem I see is some dark grey fonts over the gray background (and I can't find where to change that). Otherwise, it looks great.
Thanks for this beautiful theme again!
Marcelo.
