Description:

NOTE:
======
Unfortunately, after years of Gnome3, even minor updates of GTK+ or Gnome-Shell break themes and waste hours of work.

GnomishDark is a clean dark theme for GTK3. It also contains a matching GTK2 theme, that depends on the latest Murrine and Pixmap engines.

*** Current Dependencies ***

GTK3 = 3.12.X (may not work with versions < 3.8)
gtk2-engines-murrine >= 0.98.1.1 (for GTK2)
gtk2-engines-pixbuf >= 2.24.10 (for GTK2)
Metacity >= 2.34 (for GTK2)

*** Notes ***

1) Ubuntu users could disable "overlay-scrollbar" if they want to have the original scrollbars of the theme. See https://help.ubuntu.com/12.10/ubuntu-help/unity-scrollbars-intro.html

2) Don't forget to take a look at the file "README" in the theme folder. It contains useful tips for LibreOffice, Firefox, Epiphany, etc.

3) You won't need the source package unless you want to modify the theme or make a deb or an rpm package from it.

4) Light monochromic icons go well with this theme. I've made the gray version of nouveGnome for it: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/nouveGnome?content=125474

You're very welcome.

Apparently Ubuntu Software Center can't be installed in my distro, Debian. However, I'll investigate the problem tomorrow. I might need your help for testing. As soon as I find a solution, I'll send you a message.

That was a bit annoying: when typing an recognized string in Synaptic's search box, it turned out an unreadable white foreground on bright yellow background.
It's now fixed. Great !

The software center description page is still white on white but synaptic is more accurate.

There may be two resons for readabality problems in apps: a bug in a theme, or a problem with the app. The developers of some apps presuppose a dark color on a light bg. This is a deficiency in design. I call such apps "dark haters".

Synaptic isn't a dark hater. You could change its color scheme in its Preferences. I don't know about software center (I don't have Ubuntu) but Meld is another PyGTK dark hater. Usually there are workarounds.

I should have pointed out that Gnomish Dark is, to me, the best dark theme and my ususal theme. It was implicit. And thank you.
I tried in vain to change the synaptic colour preferences to fix this small annoyance.
My option was to change Gnomish Dark's bright text to #f0f0f0 (less bright).
But it's better with bright #ffffff.

You're welcome and I'm glad you like the theme.

Now I see what problem you were talking about. The Synaptic's quick search issue is fixed automatically because I used the Pixmap engine for GTK2 entries. I hope all GTK2 apps will be ported to GTK3 soon and we'll get rid of such issues.

Any thoughts on how is the best way to approach getting the message window (both input and message log area) to adhere to the theme? Love this theme, really would like some help getting that one small issue figured out though.. I spend so much time in chat, the black-on-white default pidgin settings breaks my eyeballs.. =/

Thanks in advance, and great job on this theme. Works well on ubuntu 12.04 / unity.

I forgot to say that the (GTK3+Shell) theme shouldn't work in an updated Ubuntu 12.04 with a Gnome desktop. But I'll update it as soon as Gnome-3.4 comes into Debian.

Just a quick update. That appears to have gotten it!

I did what you said, edited the /usr/share/GnomishDark/gtk-2.0/gtkrc.. simply changed the HEX# values, went into Pidgin, went to plugins, Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control 2.10.3, clicked configure and clicked the button "re-read gtkrc files" and poof.. I now have exactly what I wanted!

So far, the themes (or skins rather) that I installed for both FFox and Chrome are overriding the GTK-2.0 info, so I'm not seeing any of the junk in form boxes and whatnot.

All is well for now! Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

Good to hear that!

If the GTK3 theme works for you, you sould still have GTK-3.2. Updating it to GTK-3.4 will break the theme in its current form. I've made a version for GTK-3.4 but I have to wait until gnome-shell-3.4 comes into Debian.

Cool thanks, I am going to play around with that. I am actually after a Green on Black (old school terminal type) look, so I'll probably just change some hex#'s around a bit.. after 16hrs a day at the kb, my eyeballs want to pop out of my skull with too much black-on-white..

I understand the dark hating apps.. Unfortunate, but at least we have little work arounds. I am hoping firefox and chrome enabled themes will override the GTK theme and keep me sane. Pidgin is the only app that I currently have any "preference issue with".. I tried the pidgin plugin for theme customization already, unsuccessful.. They don't let you change what it is that I want changed...

As for the theme+shell, I am currently using Unity with just the gnomish-dark theme enabled, not gnome shell.. Also stayed with Ambiance for the window theme b/c I like the high contrast "Orange" X in the corner and white-on-grey active window title bar, personally.. So far everything is working pretty. Before this I was toying with Adwaita-Dark, it was kinda cool because the nataulis side bar was just a tid bit darker than the location/file area background, but your theme is both GTK2 and 3 compliant, which the other was not.

Thanks for the quick reply. Great work on the theme!

You want Pidgin's chat window to be white-on-black? Open "gtkrc" (in the folder gtk-2.0), find style "view" and comment out its two lines (put a # before each of them). They should be lines 387-388. Then if you restart Pidgin, its chat windows will have a dark bg.

However, that change will affect all GTK-2.0 text views. So, for example, if you encounter readability issues in Firefox, revert the change. Unfortunately, some apps are dark-haters.

BTW, I'll update the theme for Gnome-3.4 soon and its GTK+2.0 part will be more attractive.

How to get that effect on your theme? Its almost like chat bubbles ect....... Really dont know how to explain it better other then what I have drawn a circle around on the photo.

Report

C

Oh, now I see what you say :) I intentionally removed that in my shell theme as I wanted it to look more serious. You see, tastes are so different ;) Restoring that "bubble" shape isn't straightforward but you could use the default shell theme with GnomishDark's window and GTK+ themes through "Advanced Settings"; they're compatible enough.

Thanks a million for the super fast reply love your theme. Didn't have a chrome folder so I made one placed the two .css files in there and its working now thanks very much. Also no big deal but is there a way like when you mouse over the calendar for example you get those nice chat bubble like windows if you get me? If I mouse over it on this theme its plain drop down not sure if you can understand what I mean.

Report

C

You're welcome.

Showing bubbles at mouse-over is beyond what a theme can do and is related to the app itself. A theme can change only the color and gradient of some widgets when they go under the mouse cursor or are clicked.

How exactly do I fix the white font on white background in Firefox. I have a .mozilla/firefox folder in my home folder already so I make a chrome folder inside that and then add the text
input, textarea, select {
-moz-appearance: none !important;
background-color: white;
color: black;
}
save it as userChrome.css? Tried this didnt solve my problem. Could you explain it a bit better what exactly I have to do. Nice theme also would be great if I could fix this.

BTW, don't forget to restart Firefox after creating '~/.mozilla/firefox/.../chrome/userContent.css' (and also '~/.mozilla/firefox/.../chrome/userChrome.css') as explained above.

Report

Inside your .mozilla/firefox folder there's another folder, whose name is different for different users and because of that, I used "..." for its name in the above explanation. However, its name should be something like "xyz.default". It contains all settings of Firefox and the "chrome" folder should be in it too.
