Description:

Windows 7 basic theme lookalike v.2 :)

Hi there,

so here's the sequel of my 1st attempt to achieve a lookalike to the (so hated) Win.7 appearance.

My 1st try was posted in the early days of June :

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Windows+7+basic+theme+lookalike?content=106601&PHPSESSID=9576fd3e02ec62d4f8d951310eabc9da

I tried then to give the panel the transparency there is in the sosoft OS :)
I guess I find a way to do the trick.

So :

- 1 ) firstly, install the gtk theme I have managed to asemble, a few changes have I done :
they'll be more obvious at the end of the "to do" affair, cause without transparency it just looks blahhh.

- 2 ) when you're done with the gtk theme install,
use the panel.bg.png I provided inside the gtk files as a picture for the panel :
Just right click on the panel, then properties, backgroud, background picture,
and select the picture I provided in the main folder of my theme.
The path should probably be : ~/.themes/Win7.Basic.02/gtk-2.0/panel.bg.png.

If I didn't screw the whole thing, you'll be able to see a true transparent panel bar with soft cloudy mouseover effect and a shady dark button for the foreground open window.

I invite you to read my previous post to get the information about the who's who about this work.

Again, I simply put together things I found here and there but 4 sure didn't do the whole thing on my own, I simply don't have the skills.

Thanx, and enjoy.

P.S.
For all you win$ haters, please pass your way and don't polute this thread with your bad manners. The philosophy is about sharing, not hating.
And 15000 + downloaders of my previous version can't be wrong, nop ?

PS.2 : The icon theme is now available here : http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Win.7.basic.icon.theme.trial.01?content=109359
Enjoy

Also if you want to change the colour of the panel font there is a program to edit the settings:

sudo apt-get install gnome-color-chooser

Then look in System→Prefs→GNOME Color Chooser on the panel tab, tick normal and pick a colour then apply.

Have you read the instructions regarding the how to get transparent panel bar?

When your browser redirect you to the downloading page :
- 1 ) just type the 3 numbers you're asked for, then' it's important, click with your mouse on the text below saying "Télécharger le fichier !".
You're done.

- 2 ) If there's a bug, you're then directed on another page saying : "your checking code seems incorrect"

- 3 ) Then click on the blue underlined "Retour". So you're back to the 1st page. Enter numbers again. Then step 1).

Buggy but free, that's why I used it :)

You're absolutely right 'bout the "forced" icons.
I kept 'em 'cause I build this theme upon another one that was build this way (i.e. with browsing icons given with).
But considering the icon theme I invite you to use is aiming at looking like Win.7, it is right to assume there's no need to let'em in.
I'll change it soon.
Thanx for your comment

Thanks, yes if you are going for the blanket win7 look install the complete icon pack, but I like to mix and match and try new icons every week

I see that if you open the file and change one line at the top it works great!

Open this file:

.themes/Win7.Basic.02/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

comment out the icons line near the top with a # so that it looks like this:

#include "icons/iconrc"

By the way. The glassy mouse-overs for the panel look great when the panel is 42 pixels using the bg you made.

Would be great if you didn't force the icons for back/forward/refresh. Makes it look alien.

You have a separate icons package why do this as well?

@krig

My knowledge regarding the licencing of pieces used for theming is simply equal to zero.
I put this "strictly for private use" 'cause I guess that's the best way to ensure people would understand they can't in no way use this for commercial purpose.
But I am confident in linux open source philosophy and its users to act the good way with this theme.
If I am wrong in my terms, just let me know, I'll be glad to correct what I previously wrote.

Furthermore, I have to insist on what I said in my first post :

"I managed to do this using other people work : so all thanx to the original creators.
I used, mixed and roughly changed :

Gtk.2.x : Linsta, Slickness, Azur, Paladium

Icons : Breathless, ClearlooksOSX, Linsta, Vista-Inspirate, Paladium

Gnomenu of course for the menu

Fonts : Bitstream charter

For the panel look : tricked around and ripped some parts of murrina7 using Gimp

Emerald : WhoNeedsWindows7 by ZeQuark slightly modified.

More or less, everything that's been used here has been found surfing the net, but mostly round here on "Gnome-look" and the great "DeviantArt" site.

So, if I forgot ANYONE who deserves thanx, let me know, I do not endorse the work accomplished here. I just don't have the skills to do so.
Just tried to glue things together.
Nothing more."

@ SpecKtacle

Sorry pal. I just don't get the point. What do you precisely mean???

@everybody 'round here

Thanx for all the thanx :)

SpecKtacle says that he/she likes more the black color instead of ordinary blue you've choosed for menubar... it's okay for me too...

I think you should be more incisive, the work to put all together is yours, after all... :) you must assume responsibilities for your personal work.

I wish you a good day,
and a peaceful week :)

I like how you went with black rather than duplicating the Windows 7 blue color.

There is one thing that is a bit weird about your screenshot, though: the titlebar text is a bit too high up.

Great work on the gnome-panel here...
you said you have put all together from around, so you can't have any right to release the theme as Personal use only; don't you think?

Nothing impresses me anymore.
Well that's what I had brought myself to believe. And then, I saw this.

I was gonna say that you are a genius. But I think I'm gonna hold on to that comment till the final version comes out ;)

Well done.

First:
Well done,really nice theme.
I have been wondering how will Linux look with Win 7 skin and now I have the answer(haven't seen first version of this theme).
Second:
I don't get why people hate Vista and Win 7.I have been using vista for a year now and it has been really stable(had some problems with my USB stick, but when I enabled updates everything got perfect).
I have also tried Win 7(p*******y) and it has been working really nice.
Third:
For now on KDE 4 is my favourite through I use Gnome often and waiting for Gnome 3(Topaz) to be released, but still new versions of windows aren't as bad as most people describe them.
