Just playing around with a few ideas. Wanted something simple, easy on the eyes and that proudly declared I'm a Kiwi ;-)
Set your Gnome menu panel across the top to 24px for the best fit.

A friend pointed out that the image uploaded had a much lower quality to it. Fixed as close to the size limit as possible. Full res image in PNG format and will be made available from my site soon.

Removed the flag from the lower left hand corner. Dimmed the signature a little more and moved it to the very corner.
