Description:

I created a new engine based off of the clearlooks engine. Without all of the previous work on that engine this one would not exist.

Clearlooks is one of the best gtk engines available. I wanted to make a more aggressive version of it. You'll find new options like a merged toolbar and menubar, glossier buttons, tabs, scrollbar and menuitems.

The engine installs the xl_cheeselooks gtkrc and metacy as well in default ubuntu colors.

For other colors see the xl_cheeselooks theme pack.

why the name xl_cheeselooks? Long story.

Stay tuned. I have lots of new ideas!

To install:
cd to /gtk-enginesxl_cheese
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --enable-animation
make
sudo make install

If you get an error during compile you may need to install this:
sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev
Last changelog:

6/27/2009 - Fixed some minor bugs in a couple themes and added them to the source to be auto installed.

3/29/08 - Updated sliders to match scrollbars. They change with prelight. Also update radio buttons and check boxes. Mostly a rip from ubuntulooks, but I made the prelight a lil more obvious. I think I tweaked the tabs slightly too, but I can't remember is it was the the last updated.

The focus boxes are also borrowed from clearlooks gummy. No more dotted lines.

3/2/08 - Scrollbars updated! They actually prelight to the selected color. (note: need to remove colorize scrollbar option in GTKRC - now does nothing. color is dictated from the style) Tabs also received a face lift. Other minor adjustsments all around as well.

Please elaborate?

How do you get the same look I have created with 2 lines of code and adjusting the contrast?

grab the latest svn (which has a better algorithm for the contrast option, that is simpler to read)
try to set contrast = 0.82 for both menubar and toolbar.
Horizontal separators should disappear

Providing a patch doesn't mean that it will be merged in the official code, but that there will be a patch that some users could use to get a clearlooks with that look.

See what lucazade did for the flat look of toolbars.

Regarding this engine I still don't like it (otherwise I would have accepted your ideas and merged into trunk), but other people may like it, and providing a patch will not oblige them to install the 10th clearlooks fork...

To get xl_cheeselook 2 lines of code are required, plus the ones for the notebook.

For whatever reason you always give me some condescending reply about how you don't like it and it's ugly

... If you really rejected his patches the n you don't have to wonder why there's another engine.

toolbarstyle = 1

does not work with

GtkToolbar::shadow-type = GTK_SHADOW_NONE

and one question: what is the reliefstyle option for?

and one request: what about implementing toolbarstyle = 1 in style = INVERTED, too? I mean to draw the toolbar the same way, with the gradient.

If anyone gets an error when running ./configure, make sure that you have automake installed, and symlink /usr/share/automake-yourversion to /usr/share/automake-1.9

Report

Chrispy

simply run ./autogen.sh instead of configure the first time.

Tried doing the Union theme file-it looks fantastic-but it keeps crashing my Firefox and Pidgin. Tried installing the hacked GTK but that didn't take either. I'm running 7.10 here...

The package works perfectly, extra themes are delicious! :)
Is it possible to get the same effect also in the gummy style and with the flat toolbar as option?

anyway thanks for sharing your work!

You could always release your changes as a patch against the Clearlooks source. As for releasing this as your own engine, I don't think you'd be stepping on anyone's toes doing so. That's the wonder of OSS, you can fork things as you see fit. But if that's the only change you made to the engine you're better off releasing it as a patch unless you plan to make other changes to the engine.

Just my 2 cents.

That's sort of what I was thinking. Making this another option within the clearlooks engine for the menubarstyle and toolbarstyle.

When I try to compile, I get the following errors:

checking for GTK... no
configure: error: GTK+-2.12 is required to compile gtk-engines

With Gutsy, compiling and installing worked fine, I get this error only with Hardy. How can I fix that?
(P.S.: Synaptic says GTK+ is already installed)
