Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:
http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1529612/gtk-murrine-engine-0.90.3-1.fc12.i586.rpm

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):
http://userstyles.org/styles/10822

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

What do you mean? Are you sure the emerald themes are installed? They will only be installed if you are actually using emerald while the script runs.

Hi:

First off, this is an excellent theme - finally a dark theme that works :D

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), and when using your theme, I noticed that the Fast-User Switch Applet (FUSA) is now missing entries. It now only contains "Guest session", "Lock screen" and "Log out" - it is missing "Shut down" and "Restart" (it may be missing more but those are the only ones I care about). How do I get those entries back?

In addition, I don't really like the icon used for FUSA. It's the log-out icon, and it looks really out of place - is it because you haven't created one for your theme yet? How can I change the icon that is being used for FUSA?

Cheers,
anonguy

Sorry, I must have made other changes to screw up FUSA, so it has nothing to do with your theme. However, my question about changing it icon still remains :D

Oh, and if you want to change the icon, go to the icon folder and replace the logout icon. I don't recommend this, since then all your logout icons and app exit icons will change as well.

Report

C

Yeah, there's no way for a theme to mess with FUSA or any other app. Try reloading or reinstalling the applet, maybe that will help.

As for the icon.. Well, that is my logout icon but there is no way to change it. It's the FUSA/Ubuntu developers who decided to put the logout icon there, so if you don't think it fits you should voice your concerns to them.

I personally don't mind it, since logging out/shutdown, etc. appears to be a major function of the applet in intrepid so it's not like it's totally out of place.

hi perfectska04, i love this your theme. its awesome.

btw. i need to know how to adjust nautilus toolbars height, it looks too big compare to other apps (example: gedit). its take a lot of space.

see here for detail: http://picasaweb.google.com/nur.kholis.majid/Misc#5268550906252522130

thanks

I can't really set the size of toolbars individually. If nautilus' toolbars are larger, then this is intended by their developers.

You can, however change them globally with the GtkToolbar::internal-padding setting or xthickness and ythickness values in the toolbar section, although all that is not likely to change much.

It's easier to just change button labels to "besides icons" in the interface tab of gnome's appearance preferences.

Hello ! I've got some problems to create a gtkrc, because I've done my new theme with the Gnome-Color-Chooser. So the file is in .xml and it's duble-dutch for me. Can you help me or work and ameliore on my theme ?

Thanks

Sorry, I don't think I can help. I've no experience working with gnome-color chooser or its XML files. I edit all my themes manually with gedit through gtkrc files.

Please include Shiki-Dust in the next Shiki-Colors update !! I am using it now and I think its a worthy variant to the Shiki-Colors theme !!

Also the colored hover menu looks really good .. that is a nice change.

Thanks a lot perfectska04

I'll probably add Shiki-Dust when I port the changes back from the latest Shiki-Colors.

Shame I don't have time to create a set of icons for it, perhaps I'll just make a bunch of brown folders, upload them somewhere and call it a day.

Actually Gnome-Human fits in very well with Shiki-Dust so there is no need to create another icon theme.

Report

You can now find the latest Shiki-Dust in the google code homepage for GNOME-Colors.

I don't really want to include it in Shiki-Colors until there are gdm's/walls/icons to go along with it.

Soz my intrusion but I can't resist to explain my opinion about this. Shiki color is a theme and Dust is another theme, I think that mayor of you understand what I mean. Shiki theme have one point over all others themes, because this theme is the only that keep the real soul of Ubuntu (and I'm pretty sure that 99% of us use it/she), I mean the psychology of the colour that our good mate made. Dust is good, and I use it for about 6 month, and I usually change theme every 2 days! But dust sometimes make me feel sad, especially in rain day. So I explain my opinion.

Have a good time, cheers!

Dust is indeed a different, separate theme. Shiki-Dust, however is a personal mod of Shiki-Colors with warm, brown colors. It really doesn't have much in common with Dust other than the name and some of the brown.

...what i don't like is the fact the the scroll bar of maximized windows is not at the edge of the screen.

In other words. Open a web-browser (e.g. firefox), open a "long" website an maximize the browser window.

No2 i can't throw my mouse cursor to the far right of the screen and scroll the webpage. I've got to aim 2 or 3 px to the left and grab the scrollbar.

For me this is a huge usablitiy issue of your theme.

Try the clearlooks-only version! It's made with regular scrollbars for that purpose.

Firstly, well done on a sensational theme. Perfect mix of dark and light. All the other dark ones that looked good in the screenshot were just too dark.

One issue I'm having in firefox-3 after installing the firefox fix via stylish is when you type an address into the url bar and it comes up with a list of previously typed addresses, the header line (site heading) is ok but the second line of each entry (the full url) is white and almost impossible to read.
I can't figure out the css style to change in the stylish plugin to change the colour of this.

Anyone know how to fix?

thanks
Aaron

Report

C

perfectska04

When using the fix, the second line you mention is the same color as it would be using any other theme such as clearlooks, etc. It's the firefox default.

On the other hand, if you find that setting to be too light for you, perhaps there's a way to darken it or make it bold. I'm not sure of the code needed for that, but it should be possible with stylish.

ok i figured it out thanks.
For anyone with the same issue::

the following was all I needed to add:

.ac-normal-text {
color: #333333 !important;
}

after the RichListAutoComplete section.

Note, this changed both the title and url of each item to that colour but at least I can read them now. I will keep looking to see if I can change the colors independently.

cheers

Love the Colorize theme set!

I've been looking at your entire set of *-colors for a while and finally tried them out. They are certainly wonderful. Keep up the great work and good luck making more themes/skins, I'd love to try them all :)

Suggestions:
You might want to add in the readme file that the UI fonts will be changed by the colorize script. No big deal, but I noticed the fonts changed after the install without any mention in the readme. Love the new fonts though :)

Problems:
In Intrepid Ibex, in the Places menu the icons for Home Folder and Desktop appear next to their text, but the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, and Video are all missing. The icons show up in nautilus however - and my colorize installation went fine.

Questions:
I didn't see the bug at the end of the install where the script hangs and I couldn't press OK. Does this mean the script isn't detecting Emerald? As I mentioned before, I'm running Intrepid Ibex and Compiz is installed and working fine. I'm not sure what the colorize script installs if it detects Emerald so I can't check if it's there or not but I'd like to have it as I love Compiz.

Thanks for all the hard work, and again, keep it up!

Yeah, I will add a section that warns about the fonts. All I do is make them smaller, so they match with the GDM's.

You have to logout for the places thing to work. This is because I used a workaround to fix a bug in GNOME 2.24's "gnome-icon-theme" package for you. However, you have to either logout or run "sudo killall gnome-panel" for those icons to appear again. If I do not run this workaround, you will have ugly standard GNOME icons in there instead of the ones used by other icon themes. You can read more about this here:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=539286
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-icon-theme/+bug/278033

And lastly, the script will only install emerald if it's running already. That means, if you're using an emerald theme right now, it will install and apply the emerald theme for you (and probably have that bug i mentioned when it's complete). If you're running metacity or gtk-window-decorator, then emerald themes will not be installed. I just think it's smarter to only install emerald themes if you're actually using emerald.

And a bit more on the emerald themes - I actually recommend using the included metacities rather than emerald. There's virtually no visual difference (since the theme doesn't use rounded corners and drawing round corners is emerald's only advantage over metacity).

Besides Metacity is more flexible to color changes and faster. I include the emeralds mostly for xfce users.

Thanks for the responses. I've checked those links and you're right. Things work properly now :)

As for Emerald, you can add more effects to the window theme on top of whatever the theme defaults to (such as making it look glassy) which is why some people may prefer it. However with your themes they tend to look better flat, so I'll enjoy the metacity/SVN theme :)

Again, thanks for your hard work and I appreciate the rapid response. I look forward to seeing what you come up with next!
