Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:
http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1529612/gtk-murrine-engine-0.90.3-1.fc12.i586.rpm

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):
http://userstyles.org/styles/10822

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Congrats, nice theme!!

How about a compact variant?

For small screens.

Keep up the good work.

PS: Did Compact-Colors disapeared?

I had to discontinue compact-colors as I no longer had the time to maintain it and it will become obsolete once new versions of GTK engines come out.

You can still find links for it with a google search, though.

Shiki is quite compact, you can make it even more compact (not as much as compact-colors, but compact enough) by editing a few lines in the gtkrc as indicated in the instructions!

Thanks!!!

You've made my day!!

It's the "gtk-icon-sizes" setting i had been looking for.

gtk-icon-sizes = "panel=16,16 : gtk-menu=16,16 : gtk-button=16,16 : gtk-small-toolbar=16,16 : gtk-large-toolbar=16,16 : gtk-dialog=32,32 : gtk-dnd=16,16 : panel-menu=16,16"

With this settings it's like Compact.

I don't like the Gnome Main Menu Bar with enormous icons!!!

Thanks again!

Kind regards,

./jardas

I wonder, would anyone be interested in a Murrine-SVN only variant? (given that the current one is clearlooks+murrine-SVN)

I've been playing around for a bit and it does look great. The only drawback is that Murrine still isn't capable of drawing nice focus lines (it has ugly dotted selection lines).

On the other hand, I don't want to upload so many versions as to confuse people trying to download the theme. Thoughts?

I don't think it would be a trouble to add one more version of shiki-colors, you can add a new gtk-theme called Shiki-colors-Murrine only.

On the one hand i think that using just one engine is a very good idea, on the other hand the dotted focus rectangle is kinda horrible! (but considering that murrine is being actively developed i think they will "fix it").

Taking that appart, i don't think tabs matches the original concept, i like the blue bar on top of them

Report

C

The tabs are a good suggestion. The problem is that the newer Murrine doesn't use the stripes for tabs anymore (unless there's a hidden setting I'm not aware of).

I think I'll try to polish things a bit first and then upload it with the next release. I suggested to the murrine developer the idea of implementing new focus selections, but there haven't been any changes since (which is a shame, since it's the only thing holding me back from fully porting Shiki to murrine-only).

Congratulations!

You have achieved what most Linux distributions are still striving to achieve: A clean, usable and unique user interface theme that makes the user experience peaks.

You should be hired some of those mainstream distros man.

Nicely done!

Thanks for the compliment!

Frankly, I contribute all of this as a hobby and it's not even related to my major (psychology) so I always try not to get involved in any of the bureaucracy regarding distros and whatnot.

All my artwork is based on existing efforts from the community. It's free, open source and up for grabs. If anyone wants to distribute it or implement them in their projects they're more than welcome!

The script worked flawlessly on Ubuntu 8.10 beta live cd. That was simply very pleasing to see it just work :)

Awesome job!

Report

C

perfectska04

Yes, the script is compatible out of the box with intrepid. It even fixes the GNOME 2.24 icon bug for you!

The code for the script is probably very, very redundant since I'm not a scripter. It should, however be 100% safe and completely uninstallable. As long as you read the README and know what to expect, it should work perfectly until I find the time to improve it further.

First of all i want to congratulate you for the excellent piece of work you've done! Its a really great theme (and very complete!)

I was wondering what cursor (X11 mouse themes under gnome-look) do you use or recommend?

Thanks

Report

C

perfectska04

Well, I usually just go with the default white cursor in ubuntu; it's simple and fits with everything. If you wanted something more customized, then perhaps try a few of the higher-rated ones in the mouse themes sections (the thick version of gruppled cursors is pretty slick).

What about color themes for Wine? It will be nice!

Report

C

perfectska04

I'll include some wine color schemes when I find the time (I'm pretty busy with college lately). Perhaps I'll make them in form of a script, since editing .reg files is not something everyone wants to do.

Report

perfectska04 has included WINE color themes in some of the other *-colors GTK themes (I think its Murrine-Colors) .. just use them because the colours are very similar.

I like this theme very much. Thanks! Little suggestion: tooltips on all themes are yellow, but grey looks more beautiful (for me :)

Report

C

perfectska04

They're yellow for consistency (since most apps and themes use that color) but this is one of those things you can easily change to your liking in the appearance preferences' color chooser

Report

bradwjensen

Wasn't this the awesome theme that had the font color change to green or orange (whatever color the theme was) when hovering a item on drop-down menus?

Now it's always white-like, which sucks. :/

Report

C

perfectska04

You can still have the font change color by changing the fg prelight, fg selected and fg active of dark areas to
lighter (@selected_bg_color)

It's white now because a lot of people had problems reading the text in certain themes and asked me for the change. However, you can still have the old style back or edit it as you wish, since the theme is very modular.

First off this is a great theme! I've been looking for a dark theme that isn't too dark and this fits the bill perfectly.

The only thing I'd like to change is to have the window border to go all the way around. Currently I only see a blue border at the top of a maximized window. How do I get a blue border at the bottom of the window or possibly all the way around? Also, how do I change the thickness of this border?

I think enabling at least the bottom border would help set apart the panels from any maximized windows.

Report

C

perfectska04

oh, and if you just want a larger window border, try the included "Shiki-Colors Easy Metacity"

It has larger borders and other enhancements for people who prefer usability over the borderless look.

Report

C

perfectska04

I had never really thought of that idea. I just did a quick mockup of how it would look, but coloring the outlines doesn't seem right. The corners become a lot more aliased, and the theme looks a bit cramped in.

I think perhaps the only way to do colored borders right would be to lighten up the menubar (or not) and use Fedora's Nodoka metacity. I just tried that and it seems like a pretty good alternative for anyone who prefers colored window borders.

The "hide toolbar" butttons in Shiki don't match the theme. See the comparison I made with other themes here:
