Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:
http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1529612/gtk-murrine-engine-0.90.3-1.fc12.i586.rpm

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):
http://userstyles.org/styles/10822

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Thanks, that does work! However, it's really odd considering that the urlbar is already white. Well, nevermind. Silly firefox does silly things, but at least it's good to know you can fix some of them.

oh LOL perfectska04 .. I was searching for AGES for the add bookmark and identity information css reference but I could not find them ... im so glad you managed to find them .. Good Work !!

Yeah it was a bit hard to find those. The workaround I posted is very dirty, I would have liked to be able to theme the bookmark and site info popup with a light background to match the buttons, but no matter what I just couldn't find the right values to make it so. For now, at least making it readable should be good enough.

Also, I chose a darker color than the one you suggested for the urlbar. This makes the corners blend in better, and still fixes the selected background issues.

perfectska04 its seems that your theme posts are not updating on gnome-look whenever you update your themes ... not an important issue but when you update your themes it bumps it to the top of the new artwork list and it might attract more users to your theme if it is bumped.

I try not to bump it up for minor releases (I mean, updated instructions aren't exactly urgent material). This way when there's a large update subscribers will be notified and it will be bumped up. If I bump it up for every minor thing, the urgency of major changes will lessen and people won't care to upgrade.

Maybe i'm too used to the deviantart system, when you only notify everyone when it's important. Besides, this theme seems to be quite popular regardless of how much time it spends on the front page, so it's best to leave that space to actual new artwork.

Hi,

This is the best GTK theme I've ever seen! If I were a developer of any distro I would make it default, honestly. The balance between the dark and light theme is so perfect! Thank you very much!

I know, it's unusual to ask for an msstyles version, but I would be so happy if I could make my wine apps look as they were native.

I'll try to add at least a WINE colorscheme. I stopped theming windows years ago, so this is probably the best I can do now.

That would be great, thanks!

Workrave icon, the sheep icon (png), in tray, not have the tray background color.

How to fix this?

I use xubuntu Hardy.

Report

cypherpunk

Thats because you are either:

1. Running the program as root. (and you don't have Shiki colors installed for root)
2. Running the program under an earlier version of WINE. Later versions of Wine fix the Tray icon background so it uses the native panel colour.

Report

C

If this happens, it means that the application you're using doesn't use transparent backgrounds for it's tray icons. There is nothing I can do about that. In these situations, it's best to report it as a bug in that project's website.

The tray icon is transparent png.

See this, the tray icon with Clearlooks Wise Dark theme ---> http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/1199/workrave2mn0.jpg

The way Shiki and clearlooks dark work is different. Shiki requires absolutely transparent tray icons, while clearlooks dark can work without them (even though the icon itself will look a bit flat)

The last two versions already had that fix implemented. I think you could have just upgraded to the latest shiki.

Is there anyway you can shift the login box off-center? It's current centered position causes a dialog box to appear, because the mouse automatically rests on it. This basically ruins the GDM theme.

Report

Sorry this I meant to put this comment in the Arc-Colors GDM.

Absolutely stunning. I have been looking for a usable dark theme for a long time and yours fits the bill. I love the active window stripe and when using it with the GDM, it gives a real sense of unity to the whole experience.

I'm using it with Oxygen-Refit green icons.

The only thing that I find a little bothersome is the size of the drop down menus - my screen res is 1280x800 and the menus (mainly System>Preferences) fill the screen when clicked. I'm guessing this is to do with the murrine engine as it doesn't happen on themes that use the Aurora engine. Is there any way I (or you) can change this?

cheers

Phil

I have a similar setup, and the panel's menus/menu items are the same size as most default themes. Perhaps, you're used to custom themes that use 16x16 icons or XFCE.

My themes, however, are very customizable. Just open the gtkrc file in a text editor, and edit line 13 according to the instructions. For example, it tells you that for smaller icons you can change the value "panel-menu=24,24" to "panel-menu=16,16"

Hope this helps! There's also lots more options like that, so feel free to try them and make the theme fit you best.

I have one suggestion for this theme.

When most people maximize a window (for example, Firefox), they slide their mouse all the way to the right of the screen (without looking) and expect to grab the scrollbar when they click. However, with this theme, the scrollbar is surrounded by a border and so does not touch the edge of the screen when maximized. So when someone tries to grab the scrollbar when maximized, they have to put effort to actually look for the scrollbar. I'll try to fix this and send you a patch.

Report

cypherpunk

The scrollbar is not at the very edge of the screen for a reason .. some people including me have binded their screen edges to do Compiz tasks like flip the cube .. so perfectska04 has done the right thing and made the scrollbars perfect !! Theres nothing left to do in the scrollbars.

Also to perfectska04 I love how you have set the notebook tabs to 0 roundness cause it looks the best if its squared.

i've pointed this out before and i agree. Too many themes recently are sacrificing usability for looks. The fix doesn't look as good.

I know, it's hard to keep a good balance between style and use. That's why there are two versions (one more conservative than the other), and I always recommend clearlooks-colors instead of Shiki when it comes to no-nonsense/serious business type of needs.

Report

C

The problem shouldn't exist in the conservative "Clearlooks" version. There is also a way to fix it in the murrine SVN version, if you follow the instructions indicated in lines 36-38. It's set up this way due to aesthetic reasons, but I guess if it was possible to configure the murrine engine to use the through border as part of the slider while keeping the same stylish look, that would be best.
