Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:
http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1529612/gtk-murrine-engine-0.90.3-1.fc12.i586.rpm

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):
http://userstyles.org/styles/10822

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

This theme is simply amazing. I registered an account here just to post this. Excellent work on this theme! Best theme I've seen on this site so far.

Glad to know that. The more there are people who support the theme, there's better chances for suggestions and improvements.

It appears in text fields: http://smages.com/80/ed/80ed8a3064c1088b281702a38032bd75.png.htm

With yours "Clearlooks Human" theme there is no issue like that.

Mmm seems to happen because of the setting (through-border = 3) that new scrollbars use. Seems more of a firefox bug, since such a setting shouldn't have that effect. It's pretty isolated and doesn't seem like a noticeable/harmful bug, so I don't think it warrants removing the new scrollbars.

If you do want to remove it, try using the clearlooks version, or change lines 36-38 as indicated.

Thanks for reply. I don't think this issue so critical. I post about it just for your information.

Thanks anyway, it's always good to know possible consequences of theme settings.

When using the d4x tango theme, the tray icon is displayed with white background. I checked the icon and it infact has transparent background. I switched to some other dark GTK theme and the d4x tray icon displays just fine. So I guess the problem is with shiki.

Link to d4x tango theme:

Ok, this is not a Shiki issue. The same behavior occurs with every other theme I've tried (even without the tango theme). D4X uses a flat background for its tray icon, but it is obviously more noticeable with hybrid themes. The best way to fix it would be to report a bug to the developers of D4X.

As usual, beautiful theme.

Pro design and excellent balance, it's a great dark-elegant theme addition to your previous releases.

Gratz.

Hi, I really like this theme, the only thing I don't like is the top border. Is there a way I can remove the colored line at the top. I just want the dark gray title bar, without the colored border.

Report

C

perfectska04

ok, I found a workaround if you use metacity. You can't remove the top line easily, but you can choose its color!

Open the gtkrc file, and go to the section that says "metacity-frame". Where it says "bg[SELECTED] = " put the color you'd like (a dark gray or something) and the top stripe will have that color.

Are you using the emerald theme or the metacity theme ?? Keep in mind that the coloured line at the top is there to let you know that the window is active.

If you have it as emerald:

1. Go to the emerald theme manager
2. Click on the emerald theme you want to edit
3. Click the edit theme tab at the top
4. Click on "truglass"
5. For both the upper glass glow and the lower glass glow change the colour to the same colour as the Frame base colour.
6. Remember to save and rename it to whatever you like.

I wouldn't set it as the default, but if you didn't mind introducing a variant window decoration, a different way to indicate the active window might be to colorize the circle for the window menu on the far left of the window. I wouldn't set it as the default because that's far more subtle than the stripe though, but it may be something to consider.

Report

I wouldn't mind an alternate metacity, but I think without the stripe, it would be very difficult to tell active windows apart. Also, the stripe sort of gives you an idea of where to click for resizing/moving, so I doubt I'll add another metacity unless I can come up with a better design.

what he said. :)
There is no way to do it if you use metacity, but then again, you can always just use a different metacity.

with the new update, the offscreen scrolling of the slider doesn't work. With all the color you're adding to different parts of the theme i'm starting to think maybe the old menus are better? idk. either way theres some inconsistancy. I like how you provided the latest murrine that was good!

Report

C

perfectska04

Also, gray scrollbars instead of colored are in consideration, so I'll play around and see if it looks better. However, I don't think there's much inconsistency, since the metacity stripe + sliders + progressbars are colored, so scrollbars would be an extension of that widget set.

Report

d3br074

yes, but it just seems like the scrollbar is inconsistant because you see it so often.

In a theme that has offscreen scrolling you can have a maximized window in firefox and move your mouse all the way to the side of the screen on the right and click and be able to drag even though your mouse is not fully on the scrollbar. this way you have to click on the scrollbar before you can drag. It's just much easier and faster with offscreen scrolling and all of your previous themes until now have had it working.

Shiki sacrifices a bit of usability for more elegance, so small things like that might happen. I'm adding more comments to the theme, however, so changing lines 36,37,38 to the values indicated would give you full-sized scrollbars. I'm also adding a "colorize_scrollbar = FALSE" line to the scrollbar section, so uncommenting that would give you gray scrollbars as well. Also, the "Clearlooks" version would give you a more conservative approach, but I'm trying to make the Murrine SVN version eye-candy friendly.

Report

I'm already working to add the colored menu-items as an option, or as an alternate theme. Could you elaborate on the off-screen scrolling? I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

In case anyone needs them, I've created some Murrine SVN builds with checkinstall. These are meant to be used with Ubuntu Hardy, and are compiled from the latest SVN snapshot.

I might update them every few days, to ensure you can always get the very latest version available.

perfectska04 wow you are the GOD of eye candy !!! Thankyou very much for all your hard work creating these excellent themes.

Just one point when you open up a drop down menu the hover colour is grey .. is there any way of setting it so it uses the theme colour like in your previous themes ??

Also while im at it .. I think you should rename your icon theme to icon-colors or something and make GNOME-colors the global name for all your themes. (just in my opinion)
