Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:
http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1529612/gtk-murrine-engine-0.90.3-1.fc12.i586.rpm

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):
http://userstyles.org/styles/10822

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

I'll add the option for colored menu-items inside the file soon. The theme used to have them, but apparently most people prefer the gray hover, so I turned back to that.

great theme.

Looks great yet it would be nice to have something a bit more distinctive from the KDE 4 wallpaper.

Also, don't you think the orange on the wallpaper is too bright/strong to be pleasing to the eye while working on the computer?

Other than that, great work. Should be considered for Intrepid Ibex.

Where can I find an appropriate GDM and wallpaper for the Shiki Human theme?

Nevermind the above post. Shiki-Colors now has it's very own wallpapers/GDM's.

You can click on the "Arc-Colors" download link up above to get them.

These are part of my other *-colors themes but it should fit in with Shiki just fine. I'll probably release next-gen versions of all the artwork soon, but I just can't get to decide on the new wallpapers.

until you undo the menu changes, how would I get the old menus back? Where would I change the gtkrc to make the old style work until you update the theme? it's kinda bothering me!

Um, just be a bit patient. I'll probably upload a fixed version in 1-2 hrs. I just want to test some changes I did to the panel code.

Thank you for your themes they are great. I like this one but on a 1280*800 laptop a compact version would be perfect ;) (like compact-colors). And another "bug": The firefox adressbar and searchfield don't look good if they are in the menu bar, i don't know if i can do something about it if you have an idea tell me :).
Bye, keep the good work

copying values from compact-colors should make any theme compact, so that might work for you.

as for the firefox thing, it shouldn't be an issue since by default, firefox places the awesomebar/searchbar in the toolbars. if you have placed them in the menubar, you can easily drag it back into a toolbar if only for use with this theme.

i've did it myself by copying the size params from the compact theme so no more problems, thx

I too like the previous menus better. I think the current ones are too abruptly bright and colorful, or at least they are in the wise theme (my favorite). Also its a little bit harder to immediately read the white text on the bright green background. If not switch back to the old style, at least allow the option to change in the gtkrc. I love the smaller buttons!

I think I'll switch back and leave the colored version as an option. I might leave the classic engine + 0% padding, though.

As you say, this is a dark and light theme, with the best of both themes, so to speak.

I might suggest you allow the panel to be changed to some other color because as it is, the color under certain gnome-panel items remains a dark gray no matter the user-defined color or transparency.

Even still, great theme. I'll be using it for some time and look forward to seeing what you bring by way of updates. Thank you.

Which panel applets do you experience this with? so far, the only one I know that doesn't seem to work properly is the tomboy applet.

I made a some minor adjustments (most notably, square scrollbars, less murrine dependencies, and colored menu-items) so please report if these changes are for the better or not.

Report

Alright, thanks for all the input. I'll try to adjust things and find a good compromise. If anything, I can always add more options in the file that you could enable if you'd rather have the alternate style.

I also prefer the menus pre-0.7. I've also warmed to the smaller buttons. I think it might be worth leaving in both menu options, with instructive comments as per your style. The reason I think the brighter style might be worth keeping is it might not have enough contrast on non-LCD monitors.

Love the style in general though!

I definitely prefer the CURRENT menu items. It's a lot easier to immediately track where are we pointing to when opening a menu. And therefore, in my opinion, it's easier on the eyes, and also aesthetically pleasant for those who like to have colors around them all the time. Like me, hehe.

best theme I've seen so far! would be nice if it would replace the "NewHuman" Theme of the upcoming Intrepid 8.10 Ubuntu release ;-)

keep up the good work!

Glad you like it!
As for the Ubuntu thing, I don't really think this theme should ever be under consideration for default. This is my side-project that gives up a bit of usability for more elegance. Until GNOME gives better support for dark/hybrid themes, easier-to-resize borders, and ability to move windows by clicking on menubar, this theme would be frustrating to inexperienced users.

tl;dr: Use Shiki-Colors for elegance, and use Clearlooks/Murrine/Nodoka-Colors for full usability and noob-friendliness.
