Description:

When saving files in GIMP you always get the file chooser with the other folders view collapsed by default.

I found a patch that changes the GTK filechooser dialog to always expand the other folders by default.

Please follow the download link for detailed instructions on how to apply the patch yourself, e.g. for other distributions and for download links of patched RPMs for SuSE 10.0.

I must agree that at the beginning the new gtk/gnome dialogs are suprising and perhaps nasty.

But after some time of working with them, I love dragging a working location into the places part and accessing the location easyly from every app, whithout the waste of space of the full file-selection dialog.

When, after a week or so, the location has lost its "working-priority", I remove it from the places; so at the end most of the times I use one file-selection dialog I use one of my "places" entries, and I can still navigate to other locations using the expander (but such case should be the rare one).

Well, use a lot of different folders and often have to choose differents.

I don't want to change my work behaviour according to the software. I rather change the software.

Do not take that too seriously: I'm sure you are already changing your work behaviour according to the software, and I'm sure you will keep doing so since software keeps beeing replaced.
NM, I don't want to start a phylosophical flame; I just wanted to point that the "places" thing is a good thing (TM) that can be used to minimize the I/O file dialog mess, and addresses the same problem you are facing. I understand, however, that you may not like that solution. Fortunately, you have the source code and, as you say, you can modify the software to macth your needs.
