For Debian, Ubuntu
Remove original grub
Install grub_gfxboot from http://sidux.com/debian/pool/main/g/grub-gfxboot/
Put message.vitruvian into /boot
Add
gfxmenu /boot/message.vitruvian
in menu.lst

Limited colors of the boot screen don't prevent great art - VERY clever . (note to self - if you have the ingenuity - applying ideas to solve problems or meet challenges)

GRUB

How to install a grub theme:

  1. Extract the theme to /boot/grub/themes/

  2. Edit /etc/default/grub file. Find the line starting with "#GRUB_THEME" and change it to "GRUB_THEME=/boot/grub/themes/[THEME_FOLDER]/[theme.txt]" (replace [THEME_FOLDER] ; [theme.txt] is probably OK ; remove "[]" brackets)

  3. Run sudo update-grub
