Description:

A nice Generic Windows Icon theme for you :) Looks great withe the Default KDE style. Use 'kcmshell icons' to install this theme. Now large icons have been cleaned up! Toolbar icons can be of 16, 22 and/or 32 sizes and look quite sharp. It's the only Icon theme I feel that has so many icons except the default KDE icon theme ;) I need your encourgement if you like this theme please click on the good button else you know there is also a bad button ;) Thanks!

I'm sorry to point out that many users that would like to be converted are discouraged by the vast amount of differences between the two environments (linux and windows). Giving them icons that are familiar can only help them. I would say we'll also need one for WinXP icons... unless M$ begins to sue every clone out there that is... :)

Good points. For the folks out there who prefer a more "serious/professional" look to their desktop, this is perfect. Not because it's necessarily serious or professional, but it's familiar. Management types who are concerned with their users having appropriate desktops should get the warm fuzzies.

I like the MS Icons! And my fiance does, too. If you can change the "Style" of KDE to WinXX, then why not change the icons ...?

REALLY nice work. Thank you!

Hehe, I had already done something like this (I just couldn't do without my old yellow windows folder icons), but this is very comprehensive! Sad but true, one of the things that bothered me most about "making the switch" was the Windoze look, I'd bet if this theme were a standard package youd see many more people giving Linux a shot.

The old argument that KDE looks too much like Windows really has some footing now :)

Personally I always considered the windows look to be ugly. Sure, it's serious, but it's also totally uninspring. I think the current look of KDE 2.x is mostly right. If you're going to change it, change it into something that looks cool (like the MacOS X look and feel) instead of into something that looks worse.

Having said that, I suddenly have this urge to install linux on my mom's PC and run KDE with this iconpack on it, accompanied by wine to run Office 97. I wonder how long it would take her to figure out it's not windows.

At least mine does. And not using wine, either. I don't see why there is such a big prejudice in the linus community against the technical abilities of moms.

Respect for the hard work , but for my part i m glad that i can work without Wind~1 also for what do i need Wind~1 Icons again ? I dont want to get remmembered on this sucking OS called Windows by installing a Wind~1 Icon Set.
Have fun

I think you've not read the README file. Well, here is the content. I
have been licensed to used Windows (licensee), I have the right to use
the icons. If you have Licensed Windows then you are free to use it.
There's no copyright violation, and I have explictly said so in the README
file.

This is complete crap. You're not licensed to redistribute any Windows copyrighted material and your argument above holds no water. After all if I was to set up a stall giving away WindowsXP on burned CDs, with a little sign saying "Only for use if you've already bought it!" do you not think that maybe I'm still breaking the law?

I agree with the last post about KDE having a more serious/professional look and feel. I hoped the IBM sponsored KDE theme contest would produce some nice themes, but the results were rather disappointing. Lets hope KDE 3.0 addresses this issue and come up with a set of default styles that might appeal to diffrent types of users like modern / classic / funky .

The thing is that I personally had done a similar thing to my KDE icons. Not because I love Windoze (please not!), but because I feel that lots of the KDE icons look very cartoonish (i.e. childish) to me. Might be that I'm wrong ant just used to the win icons.

Anyway, I think that if KDE wants to beat the Windoze environment, first of all it has to show that it could have a serious look, meaning that KDE is not for fun, but for work, and thus trusted more by companys.

It's also a good way of hiding the fact that you are running Linux from your PHB!

I kinda like it. I don't care where those icons came from... if you own one or more PCs, you've paid one too many times for Windows, and it is time we start taking back what we paid for (fonts, backgrounds, sounds, etc...). If you don't like it, don't download it!

Who cares if it's misappropriation. Did anyone whine when Win95 came out and it was a blatant rip-off of MacOS? And I mean BLATANT.

I personally don't want my machine to look like winblowz because Linux is sexier than that, but kudos to the developer who worked on this. And I dig the idea of sneaking Linux in on an unsuspecting "future convert." Who says Linux is hard?

Report

this theme is good for helping someone convert over, I think its excellent, you could probably sneak linux in on someone like your mom and she'd never know ...

My mom uses Linux on a regular basis allready... Without having to use some sort of Windows-like look and feel. Don't get me wrong, I love the theme, but why are we always underestimating mothers?
