Description:

"Steel Icons" is an icon set for KDE comprised of Steel/Silver icons with shadows. I know everybody loves the Crystal/Aquafusion/Marbles Icons (with the exception of aquafusion, I do -- its just too blue! :) but I saw Metrope, and thought, wow, those don't look like they're trying to be OS X, they look like, well, like Linux (actually, like KDE; I hate Gnome's look, it just looks childish). So I set out to design some icons that weren't based on OS X, Windows, or who-knows what else. Tell me what you think, please.
Last changelog:

1.2.5 - Straightened out version numbers with themes.freshmeat.org, added apps/devices, 153 icons

02/12/03 - New Screenshots (no liquid-stipples)

0.3 - Completely redone mimetypes, redone apps, and new apps/filesystems icons. Design is generally softer and less harsh

0.2 - Hard drive icons have been added for KDE, Linux, Windows, and MacOS. There are also icons in different colors for a few apps, and the old trash icon has been replaced.

I wouldn't like the still-only version, but it is getting better as you put more colors in it.
Still, I think there are too many grays, especially dark ones.
I think you should aim at making a theme that looks metallish in the way it reflects and feels, but without a dominant color.
That would be a great service to the kde, a stylish icon theme that would fit with any colorscheme or style or windec.

Good job

Hey, I've always wanted to create a KDE widget style that looks metal. Since you have some experience on making these icons looking like steel, do you think you could make a good metallic widget style? I'm picturing it more shiny than the icons. I guess similar shapes to Aqua, but using chrome instead of plastic.

The added color is a VERY nice touch!

Yes, the colour is nice, but I'm not sure about the green...

I love all of the colours in the fullscreen snapshot, especially the new bronzed CD and the red (a very tasty combination).

The blue and green in both of the browser (?) icons as well, though the green in the one without the cogs is a bit strong (more pastel would be nicer).

I think where colour is used, a more pastel scheme works better than metallic, which, to me at least. just ends up looking a little sickly.

I'm becoming your most persistent critic ;)

And what would I be without you, Telex? The browser (?) icons aren't browsers (at least, none of the new browser icons are green) - the new icons (l-r) are Opera, kppp, konsole, linux drive,Kate,KMail,kFind,KDE drive, hard drive, red folder, tar, trash, windows drive, and apple drive.

But I will tone down some of the shockingly bright colors and see how they look. thx!

THANKS!

I was going to ask for a "steel" theme (i was going to call it "metallica") here for ages, but never had the courage, in this sea of blue glass and water ;-)

Your icons are really WAY beyond what i had imagined, really something different!
keep up the good job!

These are truly excellent. I'm not sure they're my favorite, but they're definately the most original I've seen in a while. I'd use em.

Good work!

These are really imaginative and well-done. Sweet. I think the shape of the trash icon might be a little hard to parse, but overall they look really professional. Are you going to develop a whole theme?

A non-bluish icons set !
It's amazing... someone are able to think a icon set without using the blue.
It's fantastics ! Marvellous ! Superbe ! Extraordinaire !

It's the better Icon set I never saw on KDELOOK.org ! No fucking blue !

Hope, you will give us other icons like this one!

Finally someone with imagination !

Telex, you suggested not overdoing the mimetypes, are the (few) ones included overdoing the "steel" motif?

They're very nice, but I'm not really sure what a desktop full of them would look like.

Perhaps if you took away the gradient effect and made them plain white with a nice black outline, and then had the metallic icon on top of that?

excellent work, I like these very much. I have to agree though, this seems like it may be the type of icon set that either looks great with whatever theme you use or terrible. Keep it up though!

That's a nice set. It'd be interesting to see if you could blend in some other metallic shades to give it a bit more colour without making them too colourful and cartoony.

If you could produce a whole set of icons for this style (i.e. all of the hicolor icons) that'd be really fantastic work for KDE. Just a thought, if you were to try this: with mimetypes, it might be an idea to not make them too metallic, otherwise it might just turn into metal overload. If you could make the application icons, and the window "decoration" icons metallic, and then have the icons that are in the contents of the window non-metallic but still suiting the style, that'd look very nice.

I do like this icon set. Very much. It's a good effort, and it sure give KDE a "unique" and "personal" look.

However, I find the shapes (and just the shapes) to be a little too cartoonish. Take for instance the K icon: I think it's too much skewed. Also the trash bin looks like a metallized hamburger wrapper ;-). Please, don't take this for a criticism, but for what it is: a simple suggestion.

These icons are really cool and really original (Cristal are very good but too XP-ish).
If you add some other metal shades I will surely use them :)

How about using copper or brass as an auxiliary color? It would perhaps eliminate the monotonous look of some of these icons.

Also beryllium (orange/yellowish) and other metals... I would avoid cobalt as it tends to give blue composites ;-D I think a metal icon set, with photo-realistic icons would be great.

Hi all,

I agree too ... The icons are really great piece of work, but they do lack colors... A little bit more color would probably make these icons a lot lot better ....

hey, like the style... how about gold or other metal (i mean other color scheme..) in the future?

Nice job, but I think they are going to be niche icons ... Not because they are bad (they're great for what they are), but they lack to much color ... which is to be expected with 'steele' icons.

Am still waiting for some completely original general purpose icon set that can rival crystal ...
