Description:

A flat dark GTK-theme with ergonomic contrasts. It supports Gnome, Cinnamon, Xfce4, Mate and Openbox. Theme customizations for Firefox, Thunderbird and Inkscape are additionally included. Shades-of-gray is available in seven color variants:

• Gray
• Arch
• Cerulean
• Firebrick
• Harvest
• Orient
• Patina

The following description is contained in the individual theme folders.

Installation:

• Arch Linux

You can install the AUR package:

• Last release: gtk-theme-shades-of-gray
• Git version: gtk-theme-shades-of-gray-git

• Manual Installation

Extract and copy the chosen theme folders either for personal use into directory '~/.themes/' or for common use into '/usr/share/themes/'.

Shades-of-gray can also be downloaded from GitHub.

Customizations:

Each theme folder contains an 'app-gadgets' directory with additional theme files for Thunderbird, Firefox and Inkspape.

• Thunderbird

The folder 'assets' and the file 'userChrome.css' in folder 'Thunderbird-Shades-of-gray' contain a Thunderbird theme adapted to Shades of gray. Copy both to this location:

~/.thunderbird/name-of-your-profile/chrome/assets
~/.thunderbird/name-of-your-profile/chrome/userChrome.css

If you change a Shades-of-gray theme color, it is not necessary to copy the file again. You can simply comment the current theme color in 'userChrome.css' (Thunderbird and Firefox) and uncomment the new theme color value.

• Thunderbird Calendar

Thunderbird‘s Calendar (formaly Lightning) uses its own bright colors in default setting. The option for using theme colors is hidden as 'Accessibility'.
Open the Thunderbird settings and activate the checkbox 'Optimize colors for accessibility' in calendar area.

• Firefox

Note:
As of Firefox 68/69, you must set the 'toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets' preference to 'true in 'about:config in order to load 'userChrome.css or 'userContent.css files.
Details are explained at ghacks.

userChrome.css: The file 'userChrome.css' in folder 'Firefox-Shades-of-gray' contains a theme adaption to Shades-of-gray. To enable the customizations, copy the file or its content to this location:

~/.mozilla/firefox/name-of-your-profile/chrome/userChrome.css

Note: You should choose the dark style in Firefox to get a consistent dark appearance.

userContent.css: This file contains customizations for the Firefox Home screen ('about:home', 'about:newtab'') and more unobtrusive form widgets.

If you want to use these customizations, copy the file to this location:

~/.mozilla/firefox/name-of-your-profile/chrome/userContent.css

• Firefox add-ons

Bookmark search plus 2: The file 'bookmark-search-plus-2.css contains theme customizations for the very useful add-on Bookmark search plus 2 (AMO). Copy this file into your chrome directory:

~/.mozilla/firefox/name-of-your-profile/chrome/bookmark-search-plus-2.css

Panorama Tab Groups: The file 'panorama-tab-groups.css' contains theme customizations for the recommended add-on Panorama Tab Groups (AMO). Copy this file in addition to 'userContent.css' into your chrome directory:

~/.mozilla/firefox/name-of-your-profile/chrome/panorama-tab-groups.css

Note: in Panorama Tab Groups settings you can toggle between light and dark theme. The Shades-of-gray customizations only take effect with the dark theme.

Bookmarked Speed Dial: Bookmarked Speed Dial (AMO) is an add-on that offers similar functionality to Vivaldi Speed Dial.

The file 'bookmarked-speed-dial.css' contains a Shades-of-gray theme customization. Copy this file in addition to 'userContent.css' into your chrome directory:

~/.mozilla/firefox/name-of-your-profile/chrome/bookmarked-speed-dial.css

The directory '../app-gadgets/Firefox-Shades-of-gray/bookmarked-speed-dial-images' contains images wich you can choose as 'Default dial image' and 'Default folder image' in the add-on options.

• Inkscape

Original colored icons in Inkscape are hard to identify in dark themes. The file 'icons.svg' in folder 'Inkscape-icons' contains bright icons. To use them in Inkscape, the file must be stored in this directory:

~/.config/inkscape/icons/icons.svg

• Syntax Highlighting

Shades-of-gray includes the syntax color scheme Shades-of-pastel for several editors. By using pastel colors on dark background like pastel chalks on a blackboard the Shades-of-pastel scheme provides balanced and easy on eyes contrasts.

Currently Vim, GVim, Sublime-Text and editors with syntax highlighting based on 'GtkSourceView 3' or 'GtkSourceView 4' such as Gedit, Pluma. Xed and Mousepad are supported. Installation notes can be found in 'Shades-of-gray-Readme.html'.

Requirements:

• GTK+ 3.20 or above
• Pixmap theme engine
• Murrine theme engine

@khandakershahi
I reproduced and fixed the bug of the invisible slider (Gnome panel). I can't see a problem with the progress bar and need more information.
Please post your issue on Github so that we can discuss, fathom and solve this problem:

@WERNERFP, I have to comment again about how awesome this theme set is. I'm so glad your actively still working on it, most themes here are abandoned not long after the initial upload, plus the addition of an AUR package to make life easier for us Arch/Arch-based folks is just great. They have been my DD themes since release. I run these themes on Arch-XFCE and Arch-Cinnamon and they are the most gorgeous, accurate, and overall best darker themes ever made IMO and work perfect on both of those distros. XFCE is always tricky where many small elements are themed improperly, but not this set. The grey base vs blackish is simply perfect. Easy on the eyes, but you don't have to struggle to see things like many blackish based themes. Big thanks again, and keep up the great work.

Very clean theme except for the menus. I think menu items need more vertical padding (and also a seperator between menu groups)

@logarithm2
You can easily change this behavior. Please have a look at the Shades-of-gray-FAQ.html. I've also added a section for vertical spacing of menu items.

@All_Users
Thank you for your feedbacks and ratings!

@khandakershahi
I've uploaded the used backgrounds (Wallpapers.tar.gz).

The theme icons are Numix-Circle and Numix-Folders (grey folders):

https://github.com/numixproject/numix-icon-theme-circle
https://github.com/numixproject/numix-folders

In Openbox I'm using Polybar with icons of the fonts DejaVu Sans Mono, MaterialIcons, Icomoon and UbuntuMono NerdFont.

In the file Shades-of-gray-FAQ.html I have added how you can change the Gnome panel color.
If you think something is not working properly, please post your bug report on Github (see link above).

I'm sorry, I think I misunderstood - you meant the Chrome/Chromium panel. In version 69 the GUI was changed (hard-coded). Please call "chrome://flags/#top-chrome-md" in urlbar and select "Normal". If that doesn't solve the problem, let's please discuss this on Github.

I just love this theme set. One thing I just noticed in the Cerulean variant. In Clementine music player the lower spectrum analyser is not the cerulean light blue, but rather a very dark blue and looks out of place. This is only happening with the cerulean variant. The darker Arch blue variant has the analyser as nice lighter blue and the other variants have colors that all match. Issue is only with the cerulean one (which happens to be my favorite!). Running Arch w/XFCE. It's also the same on Arch w/Cinnamon.

Is the system color set selected in Clementine?
Preferences → Appearance → Use the system default color set
The colors of the spectrum analyzer should then be displayed as expected.

Report

Yes, theme settings are correct in Clementine. It's only the Cerulean variant that has a mismatched analyzer color. All the other variants theme correctly in Clementine. For some reason the Cerulean makes the analyzer a very dark blue, a much different blue than it should be.

I can reproduce it. It only affects the Block analyzer, all others (Bar-, Boom-, Turbine analyzer) process the color value correctly.
Clementine gets the color value from gtrc. This single hex value is the only difference between the gtrc theme files.
I have tried different hex color values - some are parsed properly, others are replaced by fallback color. I think it's is a problem in Block analyzer converting hex color to QColor format.
