Description:

Yaru-Colors is a theme project to bringt different colors to Ubuntu's awesome Yaru theme.

Special thanks to the developers of Yaru!
Ubuntu's Yaru GitHub

Tested on Ubuntu 18.04, 18.10 and 19.04 beta (April 2019) - with Gnome only.
This theme doesn't work for MATE!

Yaru-Colors themes conataing following:
- GTK 2 / 3 theme
- Gnome-Shell theme
- Yaru icons
- Ubuntu-Dock theme (indicators)

Following changes are made by me:
- .css files for GTK3 and Gnome-Shell are edited. I changed all orange and purple tinted colors
- GTK2 images and Gnome-Shell graphics which were orange tinted are changed
- For the icon pack I just recolored the folder icons in 'places' and 'status'
- The dock got recolored app running indicators, which are changed by script, not by file

I tried to make the installation as easy as possible.
Therefore I created an installation script called install.sh. (Tutorial below)

The installer will do a backup if something needs to be overwritten (only Ubuntu 18.10+).
It will guide you through everything and allows you to choose what you want to install.

General Information:

Please visit the GitHub page for more screenshots of every theme, issues or suggestions.

Known issues:
Nothing but it just doesn't work with MATE. Maybe I've the time to make a special MATE theme, maybe not...
File-Size - the whole theme file is huge because of the icon packs for each color. Try downloading only one color, if it's too big for you.

Tutorial

Installation with script:
1. Run the installer with './install.sh'
-- for replacing '/usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/Yaru' for better compatiblity, run this script as root
2. Follow the installer
3. Done

Removal with script:
1. Rund the uninstaller with './uninstall.sh'
-- if you installed the shell theme to '/usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/Yaru', run this script as root
2. Follow the script
3. Done

Manual install:
1. Copy your desired theme into your desired theme directory (example '/usr/share/themes' or '~/.local/share/themes')
2. Copy you desired icon pack into your desired theme directory (example '/usr/share/icons' or '~/.icons')
3. For better compatiblity you can optionally copy the files from a theme's gnome-shell directory to '/usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/Yaru' and overwrite everything AFTER you backed up the files
4. Enable your themes with gsettings commands or with gnome-tweak-tool
5. To change the dock indicator color (Ubuntu's Dash-To-Dock only), find the hex code for your desired color in the list below and enter following two commands (replace HEXCODE with your color code including #):
'gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock custom-theme-running-dots-color 'HEXCODE' 2> /dev/null'
'gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock custom-theme-running-dots-border-color 'HEXCODE' 2> /dev/null'
(or do it with the script, it'll do it for you...)

Have fun with it!

10 Great work, thanks a lot for sharing it with us.

Anyway I don't use it yet on my Ubuntu 19.04 because of incompatibility with my very favorite file manager (Double Commander aka. doublecmd-gtk, installed through apt, not by snap or appimage).
I don't understand what makes a dark theme work with this application or not but I see that Starlabs and Adwaita-dark are theming it perfectly. I don't know the difference with a theme like yours nor which files should be included or modified, sorry to be of no help.
Do you think that this issue with Double Commander could be fixed? I would be glad to use this theme as I really like it.

Here's a concrete example:
Yaru Blue Dark > https://i.imgur.com/xzdvKDt.png
StarLabs Dark > https://i.imgur.com/FGDgJHI.png
Yaru Dark (the one included by default with the latest Ubuntu release) > https://i.imgur.com/TYmRY9r.png

Packages installed (all from the official Ubuntu repositories):
gtk2-engines
gtk2-engines-pixbuf
gtk2-engines-murrine
murrine-themes
doublecmd-common
doublecmd-gtk
doublecmd-help-en
doublecmd-plugins

I've posted a message on application's forum to get more informations about the files to customize but nobody answered for now > https://doublecmd.sourceforge.io/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5769

Hi, thanks for the comment. I didn't work on the theme for the last months but I'll try to find out what's wrong here. I just used the original Yaru theme by Ubuntu and modified the colors, nothing else. Maybe it's just an GTK2 issue but I'm not sure about this since I don't have much knowledge about GTK themes. I'll let you know if I could fix it.

The Marwaita GTK3 theme dev and me are actually discussing it and he helped me to point out in terminal output the lack of lines about theme's loading by Double Commander. So the issue seems to come from something else than the theme itself. The investigation is on the way :)

That sounds good. Thanks.
But if the stock yaru theme works with Double Commander but mine does not, it has to be an issue with Yaru-Colors. Maybe you and the Marwaita Dev team find the issue quickly, then I'll fix it.

If I remember correctly, Ubuntu will update the yaru theme with 19.10's release, so I'll update Yaru-Colors as well.

I don't remember exactly why but I kept the habit to copy custom themes to ~/.local/share/themes in my old Ubuntu 16.04. But I have a backup of my old system and while browsing it today I see that I had created a ~/.themes symlink pointing to ~/.local/share/themes. Im'not sure but even then, I may have done this trick to fix the DC theme.

So now I've tried to copy your theme's directory to ~/.themes on my current system, and... the magic happened ! I've now moved all my installed themes to this directory instead of my unclear symlink trick, so the apps already impacted by these themes before the change are still properly styled, and the only app to ignore the system theme is now as beautiful as the rest.

The solution was so simple. And the cause was just... my own mistake. Apologies. Happy end. And thanks again for your work on this theme ! :)

Puh, and I thought I need to find a workaround by myself...just kidding. I'm glad, that it's working for you now and thank you for the reply.
I always put my themes in /use/share/themes. It need root privileges and most of the Linux cracks would burn me for this but I never had any issues with this.

Can you please add the default shell color scheme (orange&blue)? I ask that because is very useful have this theme without installing the Ubuntu yaru session (the only way to get the default Ubuntu shell theme in others distros) Thanks!

Great work! Using the Deepblue variant on Fedora feels like a well deserved transition. One thing I noticed is that when you hover on the close button on windws, the color shift is very subtle. It would be nice if it were a little more lighter when hovered. I wont shamelessly ask for more, but can the notification and system overlays on the dark variants be dark too?
Kudos, and thank you

Dark notifcations is in the works, when I've the time for it. It's time consuming but I'll release a Yaru-Colors-"Night" theme pack, but I don't know when. The idea is great and you're not the first one who mentioned this.

The colors of the close button are in the same shade as stock Yaru, but I'll take a look over it and maybe update it after the easter weekend ;)

So far, I like what I'm seeing, although I did notice a few bugs:

1) The icon themes all had "*Theme Name*" as their icon names.

2) Having installed the themes in /usr/share/icons and /usr/share/themes, respectively, I found that they weren't showing up in MATE's theme list. Going back to those folders, I noticed that the permissions weren't allowing regular users to access them.

3) On the light themes, the taskbar still had a dark background.

Don't get me wrong, I like what you've done here, it just needs a little polishing up. :-)

Oh, and I would also like to see orange and teal variants of this theme series, too.

I used the source of Ubuntus original Yaru theme, so it doesn't support MATE, only Gnome. The Yaru-MATE theme is just a MATE styled one, not a theme for MATE.
They won't show up in MATEs theme manager, because they don't support Metacity. That's also the reason why the taskbar won't get themed.

I missed to edit the index files for the icons, apparently, I'll fix it. I didn't notice this, maybe because they're no issues with gnome.

I already found out what's wrong with MATE and Metacity and how to fix this. It's possible but it's very hard and time consuming work. Maybe I'll create Yaru-Colors for MATE later, maybe not.

I thought about a Teal theme, but forgot it, some how. Aqua is the nearest to teal, I'll add this, for sure...thanks for this.
Orange isn't available for Yaru-Colors, because it's the stock theme (also Gnome, only).
If I create MATE support, I'll add stock Yaru, too.
